Plex DVR - Unencrypted channels showing as "protected"

I have a supported TV-Tuner device (Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-22XX) which was recording basic cable channels using WinTV. As a side note, there are no cable boxes to go through and the channels are QAM 256. WinTV successfully scanned and found all available cable channels and was recording without any problems.

I decided to support Plex as I have been using the free server for over a year and I subscribed to Plex Pass. One problem I encountered was that Plex scanned the cable channels, and found 107 of them but marked all of them as “protected” which means the DVR function is currently unusable for me. Why am I able to record with WinTV but not Plex DVR (i.e. why is Plex recognizing the channels as protected)?

Any advice appreciated.

Woops, I just realized there is a DVR section to post this question. Admin, please move thread if needed

+1 for Plex dealing with the CCI bits

The HDHomerun devices use DTCP-IP

Use some of the revenue generated by Plex Pass subscriptions to become a DTLA member and implement the protocol.

Exactly the same problem as Jixy. I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out why Plex was finding my clear QAM channels during the scan, but dropping them once the scan was finished and/or marking them as protected. Tried it on Windows and Linux servers with the same results. w-scan on a Linux box finds all of the channels and WinTV has no problems with it. It’s a WinTV-HVR-2250 so it’s “supported”, but only if you have an antenna I suppose? Anyway, I actually have things to do and I’m too old for this Beta crap so I went back to WinTV. Thanks for the insight depassp. Maybe my hair will start growing back now.

+1

I have been running 70 channels through an old analog Hauppauge and WinTV for a while now. Just picked up a Volar Hybrid Q because it was on the supported list and also supported analog input. It pulls all the same channels with it’s own software, but I only get 9 when I scan through Plex DVR, disappointing for sure.

It is a bummer that I will not be able to use the DVR function for now. Back to WinTV for that function. Hopefully Plex will be able to access non-encrypted cable channels in the future.

Is there a fix coming for the protected channel issue? There are a few channels like ESPN that show as protected but i know will play with WinTv.

1 year later and still no support for this? I have the same problem. I see in the log that the channels are detected but dropped afterward. And the strangest thing? If I install plex on linux he dicovr them just fine!(but the remote won’T work in linux, so back to windows)

I have almost the same problem which I explain here:

Why cant the user choose which channel that is encrypted or not?

Has been been resolved?
