I’m delighted with my mix of Linux Plex Server, a couple of NVidia Shields, and my Comcast/XFinity cablecard-enabled HDHomeRun tuner. Live TV, DVR, guide downloads… all good and getting better. (Thank you Plex team!)
NOW, I’m considering using my second/spare HDHomeRun tuner to ADD OTA tuning of local/free channels here in the Chicago area.
Specifically, I’m fairly sure I can add the second HDHR tuner to Plex, but what kinds of pain will I encounter on the user experience in Tuning, Program Guides, recording conflicts.
Any traps to avoid? Do I fear something that will just work out great?
Plex will allow you to add the OTA tuner but be aware that on a single Plex Media Server you can only configure a single EPG which is either for OTA or Cable. If you are lucky and all the channels you receive OTA are also received by your cable TV connection you might be able to configure the OTA tuner using the Cable Guide data. This is mentioned in the Frequently Asked Questions – DVR & Live TV.
Can I add more than one DVR tuner?
Multiple tuners can be added from within the Plex Web app, provided you are using version 2.10.5 or newer. Tuners should be of the same type; all OTA or all cable, on the same Plex Media Server
