MKV Subtitles quit working

I’m running my PMS presently on a Synology NAS. All of my videos are in *.mkv format with all the subtitles in the container. The subtitles show up as available on all the videos but when I select them on they don’t work. They used to work. What changed in PMS that these are no longer available?

What client(s) and version(s)?

All the clients. Whether I’m streaming to my iOS devices (all with the latest versions of Plex), to my Samsung TV w/Plex app or to my computer via the Chrome Browser. I’m running the most current version of PMS on my Synology 3.73.2

How do you mean not working?
My AFTV suddenly wants to trasncode when it never used to with forced PGS subs.

As @reddwarfcrew asks, do you mean not display at all, causes buffering, causes the video not to play, etc.?

Also, any specific type of subtitle - PGS/VOBSUB/SRT?

I’ve PMS 1.13.9.5456 on a DS918+. Ran a quick test with Plex Web, Chrome, v3.73.2, Win10.

Blu-ray rip w/ PGS: The subtitles display correctly. However, they must be burned in, which forces a video transcode. Because of the transcoding, the video buffers every few seconds.

DVD rip w/ VOBSUB: The subtitles display correctly. They must be burned in, so the video transcodes. No buffering, since the DS918+ can handle a MPEG2/480p transcode OK.

Blue-ray rip with external SRT subtitles: Interestingly, SRTs transcode to ASS. However, the video still direct plays and there is no buffering. FWIW, I don’t remember SRTs transcoding in Plex Web. I thought they direct played.

They don’t play at all. VOBSUB on one movie. PGS on anothers. I just tried it again and no luck. BUT, if SRT OpenSubtitles are available, those will work.

If I may assist?

Please define " quit working " ?

  1. Will not begin streaming ?
  2. Won’t transcode without stuttering / buffering ?
  3. Don’t display at all ?

Sorry, the video streams/plays just fine, does not stutter or have any buffering problems, the subtitles just don’t display at all. They’re selected on but nothing appears on the video.

Can you recreate this for me and then capture the logs so I may see what you indended to do and PMS actually did?

  1. Settings - Server - General , verify DEBUG logging on, Verbose logging off
  2. Enable subtitle playback on the player
  3. Start Playback
  4. Play until subtitles known to appear.
  5. Stop Playback
  6. Wait 20 seconds for processing to terminate and logs to flush
  7. Settings - Server - Troubleshoot - Download Logs
  8. Attach the ZIP file for me to review and diagnose.

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the help. Here are the requested logs. I started playback of Fear The Walking Dead s03e07 and stopped at 1:19. The Subtitles were set to English (VOBSUB). Previous to that was Fear The Walking Dead s03e06 where I began the playback without Subtitles and turned them on approx 1/2 way into the playback and left it on through the completion. The subtitles never appeared on either playback.Plex Media Server Logs_2018-11-15_09-13-11.zip (5.5 MB)
