Subtitles not working with many films since PMS update - AndroidTV only; AppleTV and web ok

I updated PMS on my NAS on Friday and later that day added a few new mkvs and noticed that subtitles for those films won’t display.

Notes:

  • This is with DirectPlay; if I set the subtitles to always burn so it transcodes, they display
  • The subtitles do show if I play the same films on AppleTV (again, with direct play) or web player
  • Checking Dashboard while playing shows the subtitles are selected
  • I had last updated PMS to 1.30.2.6563 on 28 Jan 2023 and subtitles show for films added after then, but not since 1.31.2.6810
  • I use makemkv to extract original audio, video and subtitles, use Handbrake on the mkv to get a smaller file for Plex, and archive the original mkv. I’ve even tried this ‘original’ mkv for one of these films and the subtitles won’t show when using direct play. (nb - I’ve upgraded neither Handbrake nor makemkv since January.)
  • I’ve since retranscoded in Handbrake a different film that had already been in my library and the subtitles play ok.
  • After more testing, it’s not limited to new films. Some older ones continue to show subs ok, others no longer do. It seems hit or miss so far.

Can anyone confirm they’re having the same issue or if I’m missing something obvious?

Update: After more testing, it isn’t just the new films, but also some old ones, too. VOBSUBs work for some, but not all. Haven’t seen rhyme or reason as to why some work but others don’t. Seems random so far, but what I have seen is that the same films either work or don’t. Sigh. Notes above and title updated.

I tried to watch something last night on my fire TV that has forced subs

Subs would not display at all even though I can see them clearly selected

I turned them on and off multiple times and still nothing would display

I just tried the exact same, unchanged file and they play perfectly

I use HTPC now because I have been fighting the bugs in the android tv app for years

If I could find a new HTPC rig that did HDR10+ I would put every android device I have in the garbage

I am having the same issue Android TV stopped showing subtitles suddenly its been since the last update. I have nothing as fancy as you going on mostly everything is set to defaults other than having movie trailers play.
