Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: same as server? (running the web player)
I have several MVK files as part of my TV Shows library.
I want the plex server to always read the meta tags directly from the files, but it appears that this does not work specifically for MKV file. It seems to work for other MP4, M4V files though.
I have each show folder setup correctly:
“\media\Video\TV Shows\The Bionic Woman (1976)\Season 01\The Bionic Woman - s01e01 - Welcome Home, Jaime (Part 1).mkv”
I have checked that the tags on the MKV files are there using both MKVTools and MP3Tag software.
Yet when I tell plex to read the metadata from the files all I get is “Episode 1”.
I can provide additional information as requested.
Can someone please help?
Is there any way I can force titles using something like a .plexmatch file?
These are all blu-ray rips with PGS subtitles, that’s why I had to use MKV.
Do you folks know if there another file format that supports PGS and can be read by Plex?
Now I wonder if there’s such thing as a feature request for Plex to fully support MKV, or if there’s a plugin I can install to support MKV metadata?
You could use Plex’s Scanner and Agent in a Library called Blu-Ray Releases. If the Files are named correctly it does a good job with Metadata. Then again you can over ride the suggested Metadata and edit the file from the Movie poster.
Usually the online data is perfectly ok for me.
So when you’re trying Plex to pick that up properly… just make sure to follow the official naming schema and folder structures.
If your library is pointing at C:\Users\gianl\Desktop\MKV_OUTPUT\, organize the files inside that folder like this:
MKV_OUTPUT
The Bionic Woman
Season 01
The Bionic Woman - s01e01 - Welcome Home, Jaime (Part 1).mkv
...
@OttoKerner the main reason why I’d like to use my own tags is because there are lots of pilot episodes or other off-season episodes/movies, and other documentaries that Plex is tagging incorrectly, or just as “Episode xx”.
@tom80H I do have all the files organized as you suggested.
@SE56 I could do that, but I feel that if I ever have to move my library I would lose all that info
I’ll try experimenting with the .plexmatch to see what I can get.
Thank You All for the quick responses!! This is a great forum!
I’d look up if these episodes are included in the Specials season on TheMovieDB.org. If yes, name them like a regular episode, but use the season number 00 and the episode number from TMDB.
I believe you will find Plex has come a long way with Metadata matching, I rarely need to correct or alter. Make sure you use (Year) on Movies and follow Naming and structure requirements
@OttoKerner thank you for your suggestion! I followed it and catalogued the extras, as just that, under featurettes, interview, trailers, and others.
At least now the actual show seasons contain only the correct episodes (as matched by Plex).
I just wish the Extras would be shown as separate groups for each extra-category, instead of a long single group. Oh well we can’t have everything. Thank you for your help!!!
@SE56 agreed. Now that I have moved the non-episodes under “Extras”, I see that Plex does a pretty good job tagging the actual episodes under each season.
