Reading TV title tags as episode names is broken again (?)

This was broken a year or two ago, then fixed. Recently it seems broken again. Typically for a non-matched TV series I could provide episode names as title tags, which would scan in automatically. No longer. Is this a bug or a loss of that feature? I hope bug, I really liked that little functionality

What is broken?

Do you mean reading embedded metadata?
This is supposed to work. Although only for mp4/m4v files.

Yeah. You know what? I just figured that out. The new stuff that was driving me nuts are MKV’s.

Why would they set up plex to just ignore the MKV when they can clearly read tags on mp4s?

Its a matter of support for having the correct libraries for reading metadata. Not all formats are easily ingested. mp4’s tend to have a bit wider compatibility.

Well all I can tell you is if I take two identical show setups (I just tried this) with:

  • Nothing different about them except one is all mp4 files and the other is all mkv files
  • All the same filenames and same (correct) directory structures
  • The same exact title tags on each file
  • All tags written with mp3tag

Every one of the mp4’s tags gets read by Plex, while none of the mkv tags are read. It almost seems like it’s done on purpose. I’m not a programmer so I don’t really know. Either way I guess I need to live with it.
