MKV Transcoding no longer working after updating to 1.18.1.1973-0f4abfbcc on Synology DS918+

Some information:

  1. The DS1815+ has no hardware transcoding capability
  2. The DS1815+ is barely strong enough to transcode SD 1080i. There is no way it can do more. I own a DS1815+
  3. Player issues are off-topic for this thread.
  4. Codec-related solutions are off-topic for this thread.

I will thank everyone to please stay on topic.

Is this still a problem as of 1.18.4.2171?

I just set up a Plex server on a new Synology DS918+ and have been trying to get HW transcoding working. It works perfectly sometimes, and then it doesn’t - takes a long time to start playing, and finally plays garbled video when it eventually starts (see below). At first I thought it was specific formats that didn’t work (e.g. it appeared that decoding HEVC 8-bit wasn’t working, but 10-bit was). But after a lot of tinkering it seems random.

I found this post at last, and I tried deleting the driver as suggested and it seems to be working. But it also would work sometimes before, so I guess I won’t know if it’s stable for a little while.

I have never had this config up and running before; I’m migrating from running on a PC with hw transcoding using an nvidia card, which worked fine. So it’s hard to know if I just set something up incorrectly, or if some other issue is causing the problem.

Go back to 1.16.5 from Synology.
The transcoder issue is known.

So in other word ā€œyes - it’s still a problem in 1.18.4.2171ā€? Just trying to be totally clear that there’s only one problem at play here, since there have been different remediations discussed (rolling back; removing buggy driver).

EDIT: Never mind - I saw pic at top of this thread which I missed before: Hardware Transcoding broken when burning subtitles ApolloLake-based Synology NASes - #189 by nibbles

which looks exactly like mine so I’m pretty sure we’re all having the same problem. Thanks!!

The problem began with 1.17.0.
There was a correction which helped the problem but did not completely resolve it.
At this point in time, better playback results, on Synology, are by using PMS 1.16.5 from the Synology Package Center.

This is because it predates the iHD_drv_video.so driver.
