More Info in "Play Version"

I also agree that more info should be shown, if not then at least the filename.

Great idea it will be more reliable than bitrate

+1 Would be really useful for my Doctor Who collection as I have Reconstructions & B&W animations & Colour animations and currently there is no way to differentiate

Folder name for series and file name for movies. Maybe add audio languages present as well or let the server admin decide which information to display

Still counting on this feature

Play Version should support displaying the edition name.

this should be a quick fix. much needed

All versions would have the same edition name, though.

You’re right. What I really want is to merge different editions, and to have the ability to choose “Play Edition” just like how we can choose “Play Version”.

Why?

The Editions feature is great, because it SEPERATES the movie entries opening the ability to show different posters, different runtimes, different age restrictions and such.

EDIT: Best option would simply supporting {version-“version name”} (collapsing the entries while showing “version name” in the selection window) in addition to keeping the edition feature like it is with {edition-“edition name”} (seperating the entries while showing the edition name in the library view)

I’d prefer not to have duplicate movie entries, even for different cuts. I’d like to merge these editions but still have a switch function on the movie info page. Switching editions would also change the corresponding posters, duration, etc. They’d maintain their unique info, but can be switched, not just during playback, but also on the info page.

I like your {version-“version name”} idea.

Some multiple editions movies don’t need merging, especially if they have separate entries on TMDB. But for others, especially those released simultaneously with minor differences, I see no need for separate display.

These are personal preferences, and it would be great if Plex could consider these as options.

I use edition as version because Plex doesn’t support “version name”. If Plex could implement {version-“version name”}, that would be great. But I do like the “edition name” display, as it shows on the grid. I hope “version name” can do the same, as I only need version, not edition, or make it as options.

There just needs to be a button called editions, and when you click it, it shows you drop-down menu with all the available Editions if there’s more than one.
There’s really no need for multiple duplications in a library.

Hi all. While I am not going to close this out, this isn’t something we have on our current roadmap. As others have pointed out here, we do offer both edition and version support. There is a great article with information about the differences here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381043-multi-version-movies/ (note - this was posted much earlier in this request thread and I am re-posting for additional visibility).

Just to confirm, it is understood what is being asked for here. If I were to summarize (and feel free to correct if this if needed) it would be to include the ability to select for playback either the target version or edition from a single title info page.

I’d say you slightly missed the mark.

While I think a large majority would like both versions and editions in a single item - there is a stepping stone improvement you can all make.

Even if combining versions and editions is not on your roadmap right now (bad call, but whatever), what about just making version selections more readable?

Right now, only being able to see resolution and bitrate is not always enough for users to ensure they’re picking the right one. Just make the version information more verbose to help with user selection. That can be completely separate from combining editions and versions.

While I have you: why can users not pick the version they want when it comes to downloads? Users can play a specific version. And users were able to pick the version to download when it was called Sync. But now with downloads that choice is missing. I’ve lost count of how many closed threads I’ve seen of users asking for that back. Is there one main feature request thread that is still open and tracking that action?

I think this might be something to take a look at and we already have plans to target things in this area later this year. I have added this to the list of topics being considered for that work from this discussion.

Also, as you may guess, we try not to let threads wander too far off the original topic, so don’t be suprised if we try and cleanup and re-focus this thread a little bit. That is why the downloads question makes this tougher for me to go too deep here - but as the answer somewhat relates to the thread - the short answer is that downloads is a high priority for us with work ongoing right now and additional work planned for later in the year. However, selecting specific versions for downloads faces the same challenges that are being called out in this thread - without more clarity in selecting the version it is harder to make sure that the intended version is being selected correctly. While this may prompt some more feedback, please remember, as stated above, this isn’t something we will be looking at and considering until later this year at the earliest. Also, I would ask that if you have additional questions or comment around downloads that we move them to a more appropriate thread.

There’s a separate suggestion dedicated to downloading a specific version (or select which version to be used as base for the transcoded download)

Having just the file name attached to the chooseable options would be a godsend for me too. It’s very hard to decipher what to choose when I have more than 2 versions.

Even though I shouldn’t have more than 2 versions.

Sad that this is still an issue 6 years later.

Making the filename visible would solve my use case, as I especially care about the codec being used, as say 1mbps x265 might even better than say 2mbps x264.

Also downloading historical copyright-expired films from archive.org results in all sorts of formats and files, so unless filename is visible, it’s too tedious to use plex for watching such. However some of the time, archive.org doesn’t make codec information visible in filenames either.

So if I could only have one thing, I’d want it to be filenames visible, if I can have two things, it would be for codec information and filename visible.

@McWanke from your feedbacks seems somehow this issue derailed from the original few posts, and became more about editions than making versions display more informative, which has been dismissed. If we were to just make a new feature request that is solely for filename in versions display, would that be enough? However, I believe that is what all voters here are after as a first step anyway; with additional things as future optional steps.
