I agree that appending the filename to the end of the current selection strings would be the most general, effective, and easy-to-implement solution.

damn, i wish this was implemented in like 2018 when it was requested.
I really need something to add custom text to organize versions!!! ![]()
I found an “Implemented” post regarding versions but most users need a way to choose between the different versions (of grouped movies). The existing functionality is that there is a dropdown where you choose between the different bitrates and resolutions available. The desired functionality is that the displayed info should be the name of which version that the different bitrates and resolutions are connected to.
When viewing duplicate media files in Plex oftentimes it’s easy to tell apart the 699 MB .avi file and the 3.5 GB .mkv file, but other-times it’s not quite as easy to tell media apart. I propose that Plex surface the date added or date modified within the Media Information page.
I would also like to see the file’s date/time stamp in the GetInfo screen. It currently shows so much information about the file, but not the date/time stamp.
I would not recommend the files date/time stamp. These can be altered and are sometimes incorrect. Date added to plex will be good enough.
I only find Date Added helpful when browsing for new movies to watch, and it is already there, when using the web based front end.
I want the file-date/time stamp so I know that this copy currently in Plex is one that I created 10 years ago in Windows Media Center and has jagged motion compression and that I want to record this new showing so that I can get a copy with smoother motion compression and better looking subtitles and overwrite the same filename with a newer copy (and so the DateAdded does not change)
Plex now has editions that solves the OPs problem simply by naming the files with the appropriate tags:
Star Wars (1977) 1080p {edition-Special Edition}.mp4
Star Wars (1977) 1080p {edition-Theatrical Release}.mp4
And they work very well so users can clearly see what edition they are going to watch.
I am here because I want to see more technical detail in the play version e.g. codec info, to account for the following scenario:
Star Wars (1977) 1080p.h264 {edition-Special Edition}.mp4
Star Wars (1977) 1080p.av1 {edition-Special Edition}.mp4
Star Wars (1977) 1080p.h264 {edition-Theatrical Cut}.mp4
Star Wars (1977) 1080p.hevc {edition-Theatrical Cut}.mp4
So if users have playback issues e.g. their player refuses to play an av1 file, they can select the appropriate codec e.g. h264 when they click play version. If anything I think the codec is becoming as important as bitrate as there are now so many different codecs in use and potential for a player to not support the codec (which then starts asking the server to transcode constantly).
How do you select which version to play when the movies are grouped together?
