Move media to different library folder

hi everyone. Does anyone want a feature where u can move media within plex , to folders that are included in that specific library without the need to move them trough ssh or something similar. I would like that feature to be considered  thank u

You don’t need to use SSH to move media around.

Nautilus works just fine for this.

I would not expect to see Engineering writing any actual “Media Management” support functions when the host OS provides much better tools

No im aware that u don’t need to use ssh. Just sometimes when youre not able to access the server with other means than plex web (at work) it would be great to have that option

Please understand what you’re asking — consider all the different platforms

The biggest problem will be the Linux-based systems.

On Linux, user plex isn’t setup as having permission to WRITE files all over the place. On most (all except QNAP) it’s a non-privileged user.

How can you expect a non-privileged user account to move media ?

I’m not understanding the ask. PLUS, why would you be moving media around remotely and at work?

Please help me understand. If I can understand, there’s a chance but if I can’t, they certainly won’t consider it

My plex server has write access to all library folders. If I put a movie in my downloads folder which is btw also in my plex library and then want to move it so that my download ssd does not fill up . I’m just asking and to not have that feature is not a deal breaker for me i love plex and I’ve paid for a lifetime supsripction. Thnx for the thequick response btw

I clearly hear what you’re saying.

The pushback / justification which needs to be made –

" Should Plex curate your media files for you the way it wants them ? "

-or-

" Should you be allowed to curate your media files the way you want ? "

I hope I’m drawing the correct analogy but I liken this to allowing iTunes to move all my media around where it wants - which may have nothing in common with what I want or have already setup.

There’s going to be a LOT of pushback because, for those with bigger libraries (like me) –

Having Plex “reorganize” my media files is at least 2 full days of moving them – and I have a 10 GbE link between server & storage ( reorganize— read/copy – write to new location)

This will need flushing out (scope).

I’m willing to work with you and then see what’s said.

Up to the challenge ?

Yeah sure. But I’m not talking about moving entire libraries just single tv shows or movies . I have multiple harddrives with both movies and tv shows that’s why I have so many different folders for each library in plex. And just to clarify I’m talking about moving stuff within my different library folders . I have 6 or 7 folders on different hdds for each plex library

It sounds like you’re about ready to move to a NAS where this would become unnecessary ?

im running openmediavault on an old but still capable pc , if id like something equivalent in a nas then i would have to pay alot of money for it. and also im not running any raid configurations i like to keep it simple:D . if the pc crashes or goes up in smoke then ill just move all my hdds to another pc with practially no downtime

Ouch.

  1. I have configured OMV myself (part of my testing)
  2. I like it
  3. One thing I had to migrate into was the concept of a Volume.
  4. Discrete disks, which you have now, don’t work well in cases like this.
  5. You have OMV, which is SUPER at managing the volume and gives the protection if one drive fails . You don’t have any media protection right now.

There’s a choice to be made.

  1. Would you like to start building up the OMV you have and migrate into a “OMV NAS” which still uses all those drives – but evolved into a logical “Volume” (a great big disk; with protection of the data)

-or-

  1. Keep runnning with discrete unprotected disks.

Im fine with no protection what so ever,. i use synthing for photo backup from my phone which in turn gets replicated on a diffrent disk thats just for photos and after that rsyncd to another drive. everything else that’s on my drives is easily acquirable in an event of drive failure . + i still backup everything to my regular desktop computer . so backup is noo prooooblem

i dont se the point in backuping bluray rips . but family photos is a must.

I don’t know if you’ve realized it but we just walked through all the justifications…

Justification for… and … against.

Now, if I may leave this in your hands, please take what’s been written here and put it into a list form and write a new “Feature Suggestion” post.
