Moved Plex to NAS, now remote access is constantly dropping

Server Version#:1.27.0.5897
After moving my Plex server to a NAS (DS220+, installed with the installer (not the package center) and without Docker) it randomly loses connection after about 10 seconds. It sometimes reconnects throught the day but it never stays like that for more than a minute. The NAS itself doesn’t have a firewall and nothing else is running. In the router I selected the NAS and forwarded 32400 with UPnP disabled. I already tried forwarding and using a manual port and enabling UPnP but that doesn’t fix it. It is the only Plex server running in the home network.

The weirdest thing is that whenever I lose remote access I can just press “Retry” in the web interface and it just reconnects and works for a short while before breaking again. I’ve also confirmed that it’s accessible from outside when it says it is and it’s not accessible when it says it’s not.

It’s pretty much useless like this if it just constantly loses connection. I didn’t have that problem on my old server which was running on my PC and I don’t see why it happens now. Also nothing I can find about this on the internet is helpful. There is no VPN or anything else that could break the connection and the NAS has a fixed IP.

I can’t find anything in the logs, it just says “async reachability check - current mapped state: ‘Mapped - Not Published (Not Reachable)’.” at some point without stating a reason. What I don’t understand is the amount of different ports the server is apparently trying to use. The manually specified port is 62421 and that and 32400 are both forwarded.

Please do the following.

  1. Stop Plex Media Server.
  2. Start Plex Media Server.
  3. Wait 2 - 3 minutes (so the log files capture the startup sequence).
  4. Go to Settings → Remote Access. If remote access is disabled, try to enable it.
Wait for it to time-out (should be under a minute).
  5. Pull server logs: Settings → Troubleshooting
  6. Upload the entire ZIP file to the thread. Drag it into the message window. It will attach at the cursor location.

It never connects. The connection shows green while trying to connect. When it fails, it reverts to “not available…”

Probably connecting via Plex Relay, which tunnels through a server at Plex. Connection speed is limited to 1 Mbps (2 Mbps w/ Plex Pass). Plex Dashboard shows such connections as Indirect, versus Local or Remote.

Enabled/Disabled in Settings → Network.

  • The only port needed for remote access is TCP/32400.
  • If you are using a different port, only forward that port, not 32400.
  • You must check the “Manually specify public port” in Settings → Remote access, even if using port 32400.
  • If using a different port, the internal port in the router port forwarding statement is still 32400.

It seems like completely removing and reinstalling worked. It doesn’t switch to unreachable anymore. However, now I have an even weirder problem: The web app stopped working. Not only that, it stopped working mid playback. I was watching something, wanted to rescan a library while having the stream minimized, and noticed that the library was just not responding even though the video was still loading and buffering. Now, even after restarting the server and even the NAS, trying to connect to the website just gives me an error:

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

I can still connect using the plex.tv homepage and the IP hasn’t changed. The one I’m trying to access is still correct
