LOL You know I didn’t realize that was a Plex Pass Only section…I wonder what the vote tally would be if everyone could vote on it.
Well, there would probably be a LOT more positive votes, but I don’t think it would make one bit of difference.
Plex is going to do what makes Plex happy - users and their silly wants and needs are just an annoying by-product. It’s up to us in the community to ‘work around’ Plex features (or non features) forced on us when we can and when we can’t… deal with it.
I am satisfied with the Sort Title method (and apparently so is Plex). I do however find the user argument that there should be more options available a valid one… but also realize it’s never going to happen.
The key word is ‘Options’. Options and Plex are two words that should never be used in the same sentence.
I would like to up vote this feature. I just started loading up my box sets and it’s not working the way I want it. I want the TV Shows view for my box sets but under Movies. If this can’t be done (because the Movies view is coded a certain way) then is it possible to have a Library type for Collections or Boxed Sets. I think everyone here seems to want to stack their collections like TV Shows such that you have the main directory that houses all of the seasons below it but in this case it would be the separate directories for the movies/shows within the box set. BTW: The way Collections are handled for Plex is not working for me (as noted here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201273953-Collections).
Currently I have a boxed set for That’s Entertainment called “That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection” I have my directory structure as follows (which corresponds to the DVD setup).
\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\ (this is the main directory with its own poster)
\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\That’s Entertainment 1\ (within this directory it has its own poster plus there are three movies Overture.mp4, That’s Entertainment 1.mp4 and Movie Trailer.mp4)
\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\That’s Entertainment 2\ (within this directory it has its own poster plus there are three movies Overture.mp4, That’s Entertainment 2.mp4 and Movie Trailer.mp4)
\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\That’s Entertainment 3\ (within this directory it has its own poster plus there are three movies Overture.mp4, That’s Entertainment 3.mp4 and Movie Trailer.mp4)
\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\Treasures From The Vault\ (within this directory it has its own poster plus there are eight movies).
When I added this directory/folder to my Movies library (as in \Movies\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection) it imported everything separately and given most of these don’t have thumbnails it’s a mess. I then moved this out into TV Shows which looked promising when I saw the main directory on its own (like all of my TV Shows) but when I clicked into it instead of seeing my four sub-directories I saw only one that it designated with “Season 1” and I couldn’t edit that.
I then moved it into it’s own directory/folder called “Collections” (as in \Collections\That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection\ and I created a library called “Collections” with the library type “TV Shows” and disabled the scanner thinking I could edit everything manually but I couldn’t. It looked as it did under my TV Shows library where it pulled in only one directory and it called it “Season 1” and I couldn’t edit it.
Please, please, please can we have a Library Type for Collections that mimics TV Shows in structure that we can edit all meta data manually? I say this because pulling meta data automatically for collections can be tricky (with more incorrect matches than correct matches) so having the ability to edit everything manually would be great. I don’t care that I might have to edit and/or populate all titles, descriptions, etc. manually. Most of these I’m pulling from IMDB, TVDB or TMDB regardless.
Ideally what I would see in my example is the main directory That’s Entertainment The Complete Collection with its own poster then when I click on that I would see four sub-directories That’s Entertainment 1, That’s Entertainment 2, That’s Entertainment 3, Treasures From the Vault (each with its own poster) and then below each of these are all the associated videos. This is exactly like the TV Show library and if I could have edited the meta data where it says “Season 1” to the correct title and had a way to add the directories it didn’t add then the TV Shows library would have worked perfectly for me.
@Karen00 You might be able to do what you want with a TV Show type library using the “Personal Media Shows Agent”. You would have to add a second TV Show library and it would mean quite a bit of manual work on your part.
@astrofisher. Thanks for this. I already tried that before posting. It seems the TV Show library by default designates all sub-folders with “Season 1”, “Season 2”, etc. This wouldn’t be such a bad thing if this could be edited but it can’t (at least I couldn’t find a way when I went to edit the metadata). Added to this it refused to pull in three of the four sub-folders and the one directory it did pull in only had one of the eight videos. I’m not sure if this is because the sub-folders weren’t named with Season 1, etc which is what this library type expects. Even using “Personal Media Scanner” didn’t work. I could not get it to pull in the other videos no matter what I did and, as mentioned, it tagged that folder with “Season 1” instead of the name of the directory.
In looking at the links you sent even these still show “Season 1”, “Season 2”, etc. with the thumbnails which is not ideal for this situation given these should say “That’s Entertainment 1”, “That’s Entertainment II” and “That’s Entertainment III”. Having said that I guess if this is the only workaround I could re-try this and rename the folders as Season 1 - 4 and at least hope everything gets pulled in. As mentioned the issue has been two-fold. 1. I don’t want to see “Season 1”, etc. given this is not a TV Show collection and 2. The sub-folders weren’t being pulled in.
Plex needs a new library type that merges the structure of TV Shows with Movies for Box Sets like this. It seems to me this shouldn’t be too difficult to create.
I need this feature too. I mean why is it so hard to implement? Kodi has this feature since a couple of years.
Plex can group movies, why not show only 1 item (the group) in the movie list and load the collection when selected? Its so easy …
Emby media server has the sets feature now. I have been testing it with kodi as my player. Emby has an addon for kodi. I am a plex pass subscriber and have been happy, but the new plex app not having box sets and no audio passthrough option in the new app is making me think emby subscription. Emby does box sets and kodi supports audio passthrough. That seems like a better solution.
As nice as Plex is as a media server, grouping movies into sets is something that is not supported in a nice way. The collections feature to do this seem like an after thought rather than a feature to handle box sets.
I have lately tried another media server called emby which has implemented this feature better with support to add a poster to represent your box set. I hope plex will implement a improved way to handle Box Sets rather than the glorified tag which is the current collections feature.

Bumping it. Don’t like it, take me to court.
It shouldn’t be like that. Premium ‘paying’ customers deserve to have their ideas looked at, this one was and still is a brilliant idea. I mean look, this thread was made in 2016 and this important feature has yet to be added. I for one would very much like it added but I suppose my request means jack even this late to the party.
Team should take note - it pays to listen to good ideas.
Most other movie jukeboxes have had this for years. It’s a basic requirement.
I like lots of things about Plex, but this is something that is easy to implement so I don’t understand why they continue to ignore something that is a clearly needed user requirement.
Tempted to go back to my PCH and use YAMJ. Not quite as automated but hardly difficult, and with a far better end result.
This thread is outdated. The feature HAS been included. It hasn’t made its way too all the players yet, however. At least bit Samsung, which is what I use. But in the server you can arrange into “collections” as you see fit.
Interesting statement, considering this is a quote from you:
I am satisfied with the Sort Title method
But yes, I imagine it is much better than Sort Title (which I have never used, so I’m presuming here). This isn’t about how something is sorted. By declaring arbitrary Collections, which could be for boxed sets, or themes (so it also solves “what do I do with my holiday movies”), you cleanup your display of titles immensely.
I do still strongly wish for an ability to batch edit better (export, manipulate in a spreadsheet and import, for example)… but as far as Boxed Sets specifically… I think this works really quite well. Except for Samsung users, as it has not been adopted for that app. That’s the only App I use, so I’m not seeing any benefit, but when I play with it on the web app it works really quite well. From that perspective, I’m not sure what there is to complain about.
In case you simply don’t know how to do it… here’s a little primer:
In the web app, go to your library and click the circle in the top-left of all the movies in your Collection, then click edit (the pencil icon) near the top right of the page. In the resulting window, click Tags and type a new name for the collection in “Collections”. Movies can belong to multiple collections, which is an improvement over most system’s Boxed Sets features, IMO.
