Movie deleted from library when first version is deleted - appears back as Recently Added

Server Version#: Version 4.72.1

I have my Plex Library in 2 different HDDs, a main one and an additional one. Sometimes when the main one gets close to 90% usage, I move certain movies or TV shows from the main to the second HDD.
However, when this is performed (either using Radarr/Sonarr or even manually), the library item shows as “deleted” (trash icon appears in the desktop player), the item disappears from the respective library only to appear back seconds later, but now with updated metadata, specially the “Date added” attribute.

Bottom line: when I move items between drives, they appear as “Recently added”, which is not what I want.

*Note: I tried duplicating the content entirely before deleting the items, so that two versions of e.g. the same movie appear (I double checked in the “Get info” and “Play version…” appears). But when you delete the first version, the same behavior happens, the entire movie is marked as deleted even though there is still a version there! This seems to be a bug. Again, seconds later the item appears, but on top of the Recently Added, which is not true.

Could you please fix this or let me know if there’s a good solution to this? I’m sure there’s a workaround somewhere, but it certainly looks like a bug (to me).

Single most important item:

Disable Emptying of Trash

On your Plex Media Server, you’ll want to disable the Empty trash automatically after every scan preference for the server.

Copy the file to new location then scan. Once it reads 2 copies delete the original and scan again.

Thank you! That helped!

I don’t think this solution makes sense, I mean, there’s still a version there, right? So the movie should not be deleted from the library, it doesn’t make sense.

But I’m happy this works. THANK YOU!

Emptying the trash clears removed files from plex. when that happens it then picks up the moved files and treats them as “New”

What Tiebierius pointed out is not to let plex empty the trash automatically, but rather when you tell it to. That way when you move files around the fingerprint that plex uses stays in the database long enough for it to see the new movie and associate it with the old record, and not create a new one.

When removing a Title or Titles from one drive, you must empty the trash before adding it to another drive.

In the more section next to Server name, there is a Vertical Ellipsis. There you will find a Universal Empty Trash.
Note: The Ellipsis is hidden till you hover your cursor in that region.

Thank you for the reply. So yes, the issue is partially solved, because now I’ll have to clean up the trash myself, which is something I only do at my home. :joy:

My point is that the same issue happens in the following scenario (you can reproduce in your end if you find relevant)

a) Have a movie which is not the last one you added to your library.
b) Check the Recommendations section for “Recently added movies”, your selected movie is not the latest added one.
c) Add a second version of the same movie, e.g. duplicating the original file.
d) Now two versions are mapped to the same movie, this can be double checked in the “Get info” and the “Play version…” option is available.
e) With the “Empty trash automatically after every scan” enabled, now delete the original version of the movie.

Result: the movie is temporarily deleted from the Library and reappears a couple of seconds later. Looking at the Recommendations section, it is now considered newly added and it shows as the latest added one in the library, which is not correct.

Well it is as you re-added it. I believe that is normal behavior for the Server.

What you can do is in Library view is to use the filters to rank the Shows in a lot of ways. Then again it’s possible to change how the Home page looks.

I know this is not ideal and occurs the same on a rebuild, with other consciences of losing played and next flagged Titles.

Using Smart Collections you can also tailor by Alphabetical order the Home page, by using Visible On option.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I would like someone from Plex to comment on this also. @ChuckPa, if you have some time I would appreciate it.

I mean, @SE56, you mentioned:

Well it is (considered newly added) as you re-added it.

Well, not really. This only happens for different drives, otherwise when adding a new version in the same folder as the original file and then deleting the original file, the same would occur, which does not.

I constantly remux files and replace the old ones in the same folder and they don’t get “reset”, only when I move the files to a different hdd and then remove the original. In my opinion this is a design flaw.

Just a thought… if you have changed the agent for the library to the new agent from the legacy agents, but have NOT yet refreshed metadata for the library (or at least, before you add the new version) I’m pretty sure Plex will add the new version as a duplicate/replacement for the old file.

Then, when you delete the old version, Plex scans again, and adds the new file as a movie using the new agent, and becomes a new addition to the library.

In short, refresh metadata for the movie (or the complete library), then add the new version. I think that might solve the problem.

Thank you, this could serve as a reference for other people, but not my case.
