Deleted titles still shows after physical deletion

Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#: Not using this.
Windows 10 Fully updated per today.

Hi.

So this is something that has just started recently, i think after one of the two last updates of Plex server, because this was not an issue before.

So, here is the thing:

For example: I replace a movie from a 1080P to 4K version, and physically deleted the 1080P folder within windows file explorer, not through Plex. Even put the “new” movie on a different harddrive than the “old” movie was located. Then i rescan the library, and then check duplicates and then it will suddenly show up there! And it shows it’s 2 of that movie. Going into edit the movie and info tab and it shows both new folder AND the old folder, which does not even exist any more! Before, this just automatically removed the old non-existing folder, but not any more…

I have not done any settings changes to make this happen, because it has just worked by it self, up until now recently. Now, the only way i have made it kind of disappear is if i split them, then make sure to unmatch the one that is marked “unavailable”, since it is linked to a non-existing folder. Then remove ALL info such as title, sort title and collection it is put in, so it is completely blank with no title. So now the NEW movie is visible alone as it is supposed to and with no duplicates. But the “blank” title is STILL taking up a “space” in my library, making my movie amount count wrong. This has happened to several movies lately that i have replaced with better quality versions in the same way… Some in same folder as the old, some in different folders and partitions and drives. Same problem.

As mentioned before, this was never an issue before just recently… I just want to be able to delete the ones that is not existing anymore from the library.

I have tried to search these forums for this particular situation, but not found anything quite like this… The closest i could find was this “Plex Dance” routine, but that did not help either… Tried to move the new movie out of watched folders, empty trash, cleaned bundles, rescan library and it STILL shows the movie at this point. Difference is that now BOTH locations just says “unavailable”. So i move folder with movie back, rescan library, and it’s back to show only old location as “unavailable”. Have also restarted the plex server and also the whole computer, in hopes it would “refresh” the readings, but to no prevail.

I don`t want to delete the library to put it back in again either, because i am afraid that would remove a lot of the manual tweaks that i have done through many many months of using Plex and building this library of 3000+ movies. It’s a quite LARGE library and I’m afraid it will give me many many DAYS of work going through everything again to tweak it back if i do that.

Why is there no easy way to just delete an title in the library in Plex? Like clicking the 3 dots on the movie and chose “delete movie” or something like that? Or marking several movies and choose “delete these movies”? Would have made it a heck of a lot easier… Just saying…

Any suggestions of how to fix this?

We are talking library size of 3000+ movies… I REALLY DON’T want to go through all of that again to tweak it to the setup i have now which is exactly as i want it right now, except for the up until now so far, 10-12 last movies this has happened to now! And i plan on “upgrading” more movies, but this is mildly frustrating if it’s going to continue like this…

So please help me fix this… It would be MOST appreciated! I am truly loving Plex and how it works with about everything else, this is the fist time i have felt the need to “complain” about ANYTHING with Plex… And i have been using it for like somewhere between 1.5 and 2 years i think now…

If there is ANY more information needed to fix this, don’t hesitate to ask me, and i will provide whatever you need as much as i know how to! I’m definitely not green, but i am no super-expert either…

You may have a corrupt database. Pull your server log files, settings → troubleshooting, and post the zip file to the thread.

If you want to look yourself, look in the Plex Media Server.log file, including .1, .2, etc, for ERROR entries that mention SQLITE3.

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-10-12_09-55-08.zip (3.5 MB)

Here you go. Have a looksie. I could not find anything in those files you mentioned with those words “ERROR” and/or “SQLITE3”.

Maybe you have better luck with it…

I haven’t found any signs of database damage either.

Edit the library
go to the “Add Folders” tab
verify that each folder which is listed in there

  • is still existent
  • is accessible to Plex server
  • is not completely empty

Checked everything and it’s all good. No empty folders, no connectivity issues and it’s all available.

As i said, this has not been an issue until just recently and all of a sudden without any provoking it, except for the last recent updates…

It’s like it just suddenly stopped removing duplicate file-locations, even if it is physically deleted, it still “remembering” the deleted location and unable to forget it… Like a kind of “ghost-location” so to speak…

So i have tested something, and it seems to work around the problem. But it is a little unnecessary procedure, but it’s also simple.

Whenever i am replacing a movie, i have to run a library scan when i have deleted the movie until i see it disappears from my library BEFORE i can put in the new movie into the location and THEN do another scan again. This way, the old location disappears and it’s all good… Not that hard or difficult, but feels a little unnecessary i think… But it works! I will do this with all my previous movies with this problem now, to see if it works like that on them too!

Will be back with an update on how it goes!

But even if this works, i wouldn’t say it’s a FIX of the problem, more of just a workaround of the problem… Not an optimal one, but functional…

Well, it works when i do like described above:

Delete old movie, scan library, put in new movie, scan library again… But i have to like wait for the movie to first disappear in the library after deleting it, before i can move in the new movie…

Again, not what i consider a fix, just a workaround…

When you are doing another quality upgrade, do this:
Inspect the Plex media info XML of the old item.
Notice the content of the guid="... (all lower-case letters!) XML property. Copy it somewhere.

After performing the above procedure, look at the XML again and compare the content of the XML property. Is it identical to the old one?
If not, please copy them both in here.
