I have a synology ds220+ nas with movies and plex on it. I watch the movies on plex on my tv and have subtitle srt file with it. One movie works fine on my tv app from plex and the other doesn’t.
I have multiple movies that I play with subtitles and then get a playback error. As long as I leave the subtitles off, there is nothing wrong.
If I watch that movie on the plex app on my phone with subtitles, there is also nothing wrong. Actually nowhere as far as I know only on the plex app on the tv. The app on the tv is up to date.
But what could be the reason for this. Why can’t my tv play this and should I take this into account when purchasing a tv?
I have the tv: Samsung 50" Neo QLED 4K 50QN90B (2022)
What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback from your Samsung on the Plex server dashboard?
I suspect the tv won’t direct play your video for some reason and the Syno isn’t powerful enough to transcode it in real-time. Based on the NAS compatibility list, the DS220+ should be able to transcode lower quality media but might already be overwhelmed with some 1080p content (except if you’re using it‘s hw-accelerated transcoding capabilities).
There are countless instances where this hardware can let you down, because it is just too slow to perform transcoding. Activating the subtitles will trigger transcoding – particularly when using smart TV devices as your Plex client.
but there are more movies of the same file type and a srt that do work. I also have a series and that is without subtitles and mkv and one works and the other episode stutters continuously
this movie was going great until almost the end it crashed and gave a playback error.
on my phone it works just fine. when I rewind it gets stuck again. if i open plex on my phone and check it works. then i also stream it from my nas.
if i stop the movie and wait then it works again. however the reason i started this topic is because it doesn’t work like that with other movies unfortunately. they stop as soon as subtitles are turned on but not with all movies despite the same srt and file type
