Movie Naming Tip

I just wanted to let you all in on a movie naming secret that I discovered a while back. Since I have been doing it this way, all scans, in Plex and Emby, are 100% accurate. I name the movies like this:

Title (year) (imdb_id).ext
Example:
Pulp Fiction (1994) (tt0110912).mkv

Enjoy!

What particular issues did you have before you started looking up and adding the IMDb movie id?
I’m not experiencing any going with the regular name (year) schema…

It was mostly correct with some exceptions that would get identified as the wrong title, and I got tired of having to go through my entire library every time I removed and re-added a share to see what didn’t scan right. Also, people will go into places like themoviedb at times and change the year, which can impact your matching. This way, it always matches correctly.

I would actually like to add this to my entire library but I have over 3000 movies and doing it manually would take a very long time with the editing of the file name and looking up each movie on IMDB the time spent would be enormous.

Do you or anyone else know of a way to automate the process under Windows? All my file names are currently compliant in the form “MovieName (date).ext” with no extra info at all and my movies are not in individual sub-directories so all that I need is a way to read the file name and look it up on IMDB and insert the IMDB number after the date.

Because Plex currently misses a few of my movies whenever I build/rebuild my libraries I know that I will have to manually correct a few after the automated process completes BUT 20-30 (Maximum number of misses) is a LOT less than 3000.

I think I was at about 1800 when I did mine manually. I have never tried it, but FileBot may work for this.

Thank you!!! I never even though that FileBot would have the ability to get the IMDB number for movies. After digging into the format schemes I found imdbid so all I have to do is add ({imdbid}) to the end of the regular format string I use for movies.

Everything in my life should be so easy. Adding that string and renaming the files works and it does not even mess up the collections and sort names I have set.

Again, thank you!!! :sunglasses:

No problem! Glad I could help!

Does it matter which Movie Agent you use with this method?

I worked with The Movie Database in the beginning. I am currently using Plex Movie with these agent settings, but part of the information does still comes from The Movie Database.
