Movie Posters not showning

Hello,

since i moved from ds413 to ds918+(fresh install no migration) i have the Probelm that the movie posters do not show. other metadata as cast, ratings etc. work. Posters only show a self generated preview.
i`ve checked firewall, access rights etc. any ideas what could be the problem?
logfiles attached.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi, thanks for your reply!

i’ve disabled Video Preview Thumbnails and Chapter thumbnails and reindexed the movie library, but no change.
then i`ve deinstalled plex, deleted the plex folder, deleted the plex user and installed from the scratch.
I’ve then indexed the movie library again with default settings, except HW transcoding. But no change.
TV Shows worked fine but movies didn’t
any ideas? new logs attachedPlex Media Server Logs_2018-07-04_21-14-49.zip (2.1 MB)

restarting the router seems to solve the problem. - Strange

many thanks for your help!

I’m having the same issue on my debian box. Once the movie is added and something fails, it doesn’t matter if I switch to another thumbnail in the edit metadata section, even if the metadata is refreshed for that particular item.
I checked is not a network or router issue, as a browser is able to open the jpg files from tmdb directly…
File permissions/ownership doesn’t seem to be an issue either (I checked the whole library folder for different uid/grp pairs, there wasn’t any)
Thx in advance for any tip.

I have reported the issue and I am awaiting for any news from the Plex team. I will let you know if I hear anything.
In the meantime, reboot your modem/router and anything connected to it, including any wireless devices.

Thx. Rebooting the router/modem was what I tried first in my troubleshooting, as per previous comments; but it didn’t solve the issue.
I’ll wait for the Plex team’s response then, thanks!

Any news on this issue, any logs or test needed by the dev team?
(I hate seeing the Movies page populated with empty or temp captured poster images, and not even being able to force the proper one as presented on the edit box)
Thanks!

I searched the Linux forum and saw several users also complaining on Movies posters not being shown. l tried disabling IPv6 as suggested in Plex Not Grabbing Movie Posters Metadata but no luck either in getting the posters being displayed (TV Shows posters work as a charm BTW).

I also explored the cache and the posters and thumbnails are in there, so it’s seems to be a local issue just on displaying them somehow (both the web player and a Samsung SmartTV client fails similarly).

Did the internal troubleshooting discover any clue on the root cause?
TIA

@WolfganP

Have you force cleared the cache?

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Delete everything under Library/Application Support/ Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches
  3. Restart PMS
  4. Force metadata refresh

This clears everything PMS thinks it knows from the agents. If there are any fragments from previous failed matches / bad retrieval, they will all be removed. It will start fresh

Thanks @ChuckPa. I followed your instructions but nothing changed, some posters for Movies still aren’t displayed at the web player (just a frame capture or simply a darker gray empty rectangle).
I later went to the cached folders, and opened one of the thumbs as if a jpg file and the external viewer app had no issues opening the file (which correlate with what the Edit pop up window shows, the images are already local in the disk).
Just to reiterate, there’s no issues with TV shows posters at all, just Movies.

Entering one of the offending entries, I went to the Edit pop up and tried to change the selected poster (many displayed on that window), but after selecting another one and trying to save, the window took 30 seconds or more to close and displayed poster didn’t change.

But at least I could detect that in the latest entries of Plex Media Server.log several “ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 28” appeared and may be related to the issue.
Thanks for any help.

Please go to one of those items and “Get Info -> View XML”. I see to see what’s in it.
I also must see the names exactly as you have them , including structure

I also need to know if it is MP4 / AVI and has embedded title/name info (metadata). "mediainfo’ tool (external to plex) will show this.

Here’s the XML for UFO, the one I used in prev screencaps:

Again, I have no problem watching the media, nor navigating nor anything like that, just selecting the proper posters for the entry in certain Movies (TV Shows are OK thou).
I hope it helps.

Well, the naming just isn’t cutting it in the slightest and that’s why.

At minimum. The year FOLLOWS the movie name

UFO (2018)/
UFO (2018).HDrip.xviD.AC3-EVO.avi

Cleaning the extras after the movie name to be UFO (2018).avi is 100% compliant.

Please read here. While this shows how to name multi-file movies, the same naming rule and structure applies.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200264966-naming-multi-file-movies/

If you have not used this convention but it’s worked, consider yourself fortunate.

If you have a lot of media, get an automated tool (FleBot is one) and it will search, rename, and restructure properly in a few seconds.

Thx @ChuckPa. I renamed the file to UFO (2018).avi, deleted Caches, refreshed metadata but the result is the same, empty rectangular box displayed instead of poster (even if the edit window show the posters and movie metadata were properly scrapped).

Anyways, the file naming explanation doesn’t make much sense to me, as it should be only used for metadata match at the early scan stage, and no errors of that kind appear in the logs whatsoever.
Once performed well (or forced match by the user), all Plex operations related to metadata and posters should come from the internal databases and files caches, so I assume the original filename is of less importance and not used anymore (except for request to play the media where the original file is used again).
Thanks in advance for any other tip.

Renaming any files in-situ is insufficient. The full Plex Dance must be performed.

  1. Move media away from a monitored directory
  2. Scan files
  3. Empty trash
  4. Clean bundles – This now removes the fingerprint PMS retains for duplicate detection
  5. Move files back
  6. Scan files.

Thx @ChuckPa for your support. I finally upgraded my system so it’s time to revisit this topic and start movies metadata afresh.
When you mentioned:

  1. Clean bundles – This now removes the fingerprint PMS retains for duplicate detection

Did you mean deleting the caches as per your previous comment?

  • Delete everything under Library/Application Support/ Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches

My TV shows are OK and I believe they use the TVDB agent for metadata. Is there any way to make a selective deletion of the Movies agent information to minimize the rework of adjusting metadata if not detected or so?
Thx again.

Clean Bundles is the menu selection to remove unused (old) fingerprint info.

The step which deletes the files under “Caches” is not related. That step is to manually clear corrupted data when the GUI is unable to perform the cleanup itself
