Plex is not displaying my movie posters

Plex Media Server Logs_2018-09-27_17-19-40.zip (4.6 MB)

I have been adding movies to my collection for the last week. All of the sudden, yesterday my clients have stopped displaying the poster. I have scanning set to automatic. When I move a file to my library the server scans and adds the movie. When the scan is done, all I see is a frame from the movie instead of the poster. I can edit the movie entry (clicking the pencil) and choose from a poster that was found by the movie agent. But as soon as I choose a poster, it goes black. The movie plays, the meta data is all there (summary, rating, actors etc.) it just won’t display the poster any more. I have added about three different new movies and they all do the same thing. I have removed them, scanned, emptied the trash and cleaned bundles and then re-added them and it does the same thing. Here’s the kicker… If I attempt to modify the poster of an existing movie… Doing that messes up the poster for that movie and I can’t get either of them to be anything but the blank poster…

I have seen a bunch of similar posts but nothing is exactly like the problem that I’m having. I have included my logs in this post in hopes of skipping the ā€œsend me your logsā€ message.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Todd

2 things…

  1. I’m sorry for the verbose logs. I read that in one of your other posts to another user. I had it on and turned it off right before I pulled these logs I sent you. I’ll leave it off from now on.

  2. THANK YOU! That was a fast response and it completely fixed my problem! I totally appreciate your time and help with this!

Have a great evening!

I’m having pretty much the same problem but on the Mac – nothing I’ve been adding over the last 24 hours seems to get recognized and I only end up with an empty black square for TV shows or a random movie frame for movies (like for ā€˜Hotel Artemis’ in the example).

How do I go about fixing the problem on the Mac or rather where do I find the corresponding files and folders I’d have to delete?

Thanks!

Okay, so I did all that, restarted PLEX and now it says ā€œServer is startingā€¦ā€ – only that it has been doing that for the last 3 hours! :open_mouth:

Not sure what’s going on here but it seems as long as this is going on I can’t perform any kind of refresh or anything else on the libraries.

Any ideas? Thanks again.

I tried to quit the server and launch it again but that made no difference, it again keeps saying ā€œServer is startingā€¦ā€ for ever and ever.

I the tried to refresh the metadata on each library individually and while it seems to have done something in the background nothing has changed. Still no posters for any of the recently added TV shows or movies. :unamused:

Just out of curiosity – why is this even happening?

Not sure what else to do, seems like I made things worse now.

Yup, I actually did make it worse. I tried manually refreshing metadata on a few individual shows and now those don’t even display the show title anymore.

I’ll just leave it alone for now and hope for some additional helpful advice. :man_shrugging:

Dumb question: where do I find the log files again?

Thanks.

Well, the easy method didn’t work because it tells me that it can’t access the server settings or something like that. (It’s still spinning, saying ā€œServer is startingā€¦ā€)

I then went in manually but wasn’t sure which log files to use since there are so many different ones and then different versions of each one. I picked the most recent ones and I hope that helps.

The thing is I can still watch all my media on my connected devices (AppleTV etc.) but anything being added now only shows up as a black square without any artwork or additional info text.

Thanks again for all your support, I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately I can’t try any of that right now because after the last restart my Mac mini won’t boot up again. I hope that’s not PLEX messing something up when trying to launch during startup or so but it might just as well be a coincidence and totally unrelated, even though it has been running smoothly forever. Now it just shuts itself down after trying to boot. FML.

Anyway, I’ll try to find out what is going on and once that is done I will follow your suggestions and hopefully that will fix it then. Fingers crossed.

The Mac mini didn’t die, but the internal SSD did. It so completely died that I couldn’t even wipe it and re-install MacOS on it, so I ended up swapping it for a new one. Since it’s a brand-new install on there with freshly installed apps everything is running smoothly again.

While I’ll never know what caused the PLEX problems or the following hard disk failure I am back to normal and can enjoy all my media again.

Thanks again for your support and assistance.

Hi,

I’m facing the exact same issue and have tried everything I could find in the forum for ā€œNo posters downloadingā€ and similar questions (I’m on a Synology NAS DS218+). All other information is downloading correctly but the posters, hope someone can give me some light on the issue. I’ve tried everything from refreshing information, updating my agent configuration, removing media from the library and recreating the libraries, nothing seems to work for me.

Best Regards.

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply, I’ve added more media, just to see if it is possible to see something ese in the logs. I plan on following your advice on the location of the information however it was working like this not long ago and I wonder what what happened with the current confinguraiont.

Best Regads.

Hello, I am a mac user too. Did exactly what you say here and the problem remains. Just in case, here are my logs. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-02_00-50-53.zip (2.6 MB)

I did the same the repair database. I do not understand from where should i restore the database since i never deleted it. Here are my last logs, same thing happens, no movie posters downloaded once a movie is incporporated into plex. If i manually search for a poster and change it, the poster turns black. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-03_03-29-17.zip (3.1 MB)

The files on my library are ok. I don’t use Synology, I’m using 2TB Time Capsule to store all my media. I’ve been using this same way to store movies and tvshows since ever and I never had a problem. I don’t feel fair to buy a usd 40 app which I doesn’t guarantee the problem will be resolved.
So I decided to make a fresh start and delete plex media server from my computer. After reinstalling it, I created a folder with only 18 movies to see if the problem persisted or not. Same thing happens, posters not detected, and when you manually change it, it changes the poster of the movie to black and shows nothing.
Is it possible that having issues with my internet connection can cause this? If the answer is yes I’ll try to download the metadata of this 18 movies with my phone LTE shared network.
Here are my logs once again.Plex Media (408.8 KB)

Maybe another moderator who understands mac better can give me more precise info?
You are making me pay 40 dollars for an app which I do not know if will resolve the problem. I now tried with 5 old movies which before this problem appeared worked perfectly and now they don’t. I haven’t ever changed the names of these files, so the naming for sure is not the problem.

If I may provide assistance and some clarity here?

  1. This is posted under the Synology tag, not the MacOS tag. Trumpy specialises in Synology.

  2. The errors he found are platform independent. Your files are not named per Plex naming rules. It is immediately apparent you downloaded some torrent and just threw it at Plex to work with.

This particular error tells me the file was first there then was moved by someone/something.

The correct name here, from BlacKkKlansman (2018) - IMDb

BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Using Plex documented syntax:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381023-naming-movie-files/

is this:

Blackkklansman (2018)/
   Blackkklansman (2018).ext

Where: ext is the extension on the file (MKV or MP4)

The tool he suggested, (He did not make you pay for anything), FIleBot, is defacto tool for handling files which are even this poorly mangled.

It will take the name you drag & drop into the window, search the internet, and make a suggestion as to the best name to rename it to. In the process, thanks to the {plex} naming rule built in, It will put the file in perfect Plex format for you.

Again, this is entirely platform independent. This is a case of poorly named media and user error expecting Plex to take anything thrown at it. It is good but not infallible.

With the use of a renaming tool, which is easily integrated into your download program, you will never see this error again.

Hello @ChuckPa, thank you for your answer.

  • I know this is Synology tag, but this was exactly the same that is happening to me. @mile had the same problem being a mac user, so I am not the first.
  • About the naming, the strange thing is the movie is recognized and matched, the only thing missing is the poster. Should the movie be matched if the name was the problem?
If you insist this is the only way and the problem is on the names of the files I will buy FileBot, but I repeat, I deleted everything and started from scratch, movies before this problem appeared had posters and now those same movies named the same way don’t.
Every movie that hasn’t a poster automatically downloaded is recongnized and matched with themoviedb, I can see all the summary and movie info when I click on it. When I change any unrecognized poster manually, after saving the correct poster it becomes black as now on BlacKkKlansman.
I’m attaching two examles, the first one is the movie you mentioned, BlacKkKlansman. The second one is A Clockwork Orange.

    Plex Media (1.6 MB)

Before doing anything… Because it has matched.

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Clean out ALL the contents under ā€œPlug-in Support/Cachesā€ directory
  3. Start Plex
  4. Refresh that movie / All movies (Refresh all metadata)

I did what you said, but nothing changed. I also repaired and restored database a few days ago as @trumpy81 recomended. After this didn’t work I deleted everything (Fresh start) related to plex media server and reinstalled.
Still nothing change, the problem is still there. Movies are matched but posters are not downloaded automatically
