I’m curious if anyone else is using a similar setup and if so do your movies freeze constantly on bitrates over 20 Mbps video quality.
I have a Windows PC with a 4th gen i7, 16GB of ram and I have enterprise ubiquiti network/switching equipment so i dont think any of that is the culprit. This leads me to my usb 3 5400 rpm WD drive possibly being the issue. The problem i have with that is even real world usb 3 speeds can more than achieve 10 times faster than 20Mbps so i am at a loss here.
I have watched my cpu, ram, disk and network performance on my PC and its not even hitting half its capacity while playing the movie(s)
have a tcl roku os TV with plex and plex beta clients… its 15 ft from the router… line of site… 4k video direct streem over 25 to 30 mbs stutters and buffers…
on my mac using a wired connection and PMP the same file seems to do better… perhaps plex is not using a sufficient buffer to handle wireless latency and stutter
30-40mbs 1080 blu directplay just fine to an apple tv 4 on a different floor and over 50 ft away
I’ve been having either the same or a similar issue, so I’ve attached an XML for a movie that has been freezing up on me yesterday and today in case it helps.
I’m using direct play with all the devices and I haven’t encountered any issues with the Plex web app in Safari or Chrome, or the iOS app on iPhone or iPad (and they seem to be streaming faster than they can play, based on the buffer in the timeline), but when trying to stream using the tvOS app it keeps freezing and I unfortunately don’t have a way to see how much of the stream it’s buffered.
Everything is wired in my setup (except for the iPad or iPhone), but I’m streaming over the public internet. I’d blame the internet for any issues but since everything except the tvOS app seems to stream fine I’m not sure what the issue is. I haven’t found any issues with other files with lower bitrates, at least not thus far.
this is on my Samsung mu6500 tv’s plex app and it was originally wireless, but since this started I have switched to hardwired with the same issue. I will have to double check to see if it is using direct play or transcoding. I think it is transcoding it on my PC though. Seems like the culprit here may be my tv app. Let me try later on a fire tv i have lying around and see if it suffers from the same problems.
