Playback freeze

Hi,

Great to have Plex for xbox. Unfortunately playback freezes on my xbox1 - it is on a wired connection to my server.

I am unsure what you need to know for troubleshooting. I have attached log-file.

thanks

I also get freezing on some high quality videos (encoded at 10,000Kbps video for example). I'm only on 100Mbps wired at the moment (both PC and Xbox One hard wired to the router), I'm wondering if a new gigabit router would help resolve this. Windows Media Center extender on the Xbox360 didn't have this issue with the same files and played fine with no transcoding or anything like that on the PC. I think WMC may have done some king of buffering to get past network quality issues though!?

I had it freeze on high 1080p files as well.

I had some freezing on a high bitrate movie that resumed but after a few minutes it was fine. guessing the buffer had to catch up

Same problem here playing MKV files on a wired Gigabit network.  It plays for about 5-10 seconds, freezes, plays, freezes...  XBMC running on a Raspberry Pi has no issues playing the same files.

Ditto. And I'm not sure it is strictly due to plex. I find that streaming most things on the xbox one is painful at times, with buffering, etc. I'm on a wired gigabit network with 50/50mps speeds. Every other connected device streams fine.

Thanks. And yup, log files and details of what/when you were watching are what we need.

We'll look into this. Thanks for the info!

To counterbalance these reports I tried last night pushing the app and server to the max with some HEVC .265 1080p clips and it wasn't perhaps 110% smooth (some slight, slight judder when panoraming) but no actual freezing. I have a pretty decent CPU though and overall good server components.

Thanks for looking into it.

The log file I uploaded earlier was copied after trying several movies. All MP4 and same result. File details found in file properties are:

Video: 1920*800, Data rate: 4553 kpbs, Total bit rate: 4713kpbs, frame rate: 23 frames per second.

Audio bit rate: 159kpbs.

Will you need more information?

thanks

Weeird...tried again this morning. Seems that after a good nights sleep everything works smoothly. Is the server busy doing stuff immediately after upgrading to new version...could that be the reason?

Well, this morning I tried again on the Xbox One and Plex kept saying that I needed to have an Xbox Live account.  I do and I was logged on, but Plex wouldn't move forward.  I removed and reinstalled Plex and now I have not been able to reproduce the freeze problems.

I was having freezing issues (every 10-15 second or so) regardless of the quality settings. Deleted and reinstalled the app and it now seems to be working fine.

Hello i have big problem of freeze, desynchronisation and slow image rate.

To try give you more information :

I'm running the playback from a Synology DS214Play.

I have a ps3 and a Xbox one connected both from the same switch via a gigabyte connection.

i run the same file, it works fine on the "old" ps3 and i have these kind of problem from the xbox one. I forgot :) I'm running the 0.9.10 version of plex server

Is there a way to put the plex server in debug mode or find a trace i could upload to help you? :)

I've observed that if I start a high bitrate video from the beginning it plays just fine but if I resume the same video at any point during playback it will freeze on and off for about 5 minutes and then resumes playing fine. All the videos that freeze are also doing direct streaming mkv files vs pure transcoding

No need to run Plex in any debug mode - the logs that are likely to be interesting to us are the existing Plex Media Server ones. Follow the instructions here to grab them: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files

Thanks for the reports.

Marcello,  So your saying the your freezing on direct play mkv vs transcoding??

I too am freezing about midway in a movie,  Gigabit wired,  on a openmediavault 16GB ram dual core i3-2100t

It was my impression that xbox one app only did transcoded video, not direct play mkv.

I've done some further testing tonight and was surprised at the network bandwidth used to play a MP4 file over Plex App on Xbox One. I have a 14GB movie (video @ 9.7 Mbps, Audio AC3 5.1 @ 640 Kbps) playing and it is showing it is running at around 75Mbps constantly from the PC (direct play, no transcoding) and it is stuttering horribly on the Xbox. I then played the video using Play To from the PC (Windows 8.1) and it runs smoothly and uses a lot less bandwidth, it does fluctuate more going from 8Mbps up to 40Mbps occasionally but mainly sitting around the 20Mbps mark.

The Plex Media Server log shows these errors over and over again:

[0388] ERROR - Error writing media: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

[5036] ERROR - Error writing media: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Are these connections closed due to bad network performance? Is there any reason why Plex would use more bandwidth than Play To for the same file and when sing direct play?

Thanks!

I've found something interesting. The videos I have been trying to play which stutter have a high bitrate DTS audio track as the second track and a AC3 6 channel audio track as primary so it will play natively on the Xbox One and Windows Media Center while keeping the DTS track for future use should the Xbox support this. When using PlayTo I can only assume it streams the video and audio being used but maybe leaves the DTS track out of the transfer of data as it isn't being used. When using Plex I am assuming it sends the whole lot over even if the DTS sound track isn't being used? I removed the DTS track from one video which I was having issues with and it played perfectly, with DTS still in I have to use PlayTo for the video to play without stuttering.

RE: XboxOne app

It's mostly working very well, especially since I updated my Synology to the latest version. I'm still getting some freezing which results in having to uninstall and reinstall the app to work at all.

Through trial and error I've noticed that it struggles with:-

  • big (13-20gb) files
  • any files, regardless of the size, which contain more than one audio stream
  • some larger (10gb+) files containing DTS
  • Eg. 12gb Frozen mkv with UK DTS track = Works perfectly
  •        6gb Lion King mkv with UK/Dutch 5.1 Track = Freezes
