Movie subtitles freezing and repeating

Most of my movies have included VOBSUB subtitles. I’ve never had any issues with them working. Some of my movies don’t have subtitles, so I really like the new feature of auto-syncing the external subtitles, since I could never get any to be in sync correctly.

This issue seemed to start right after I enabled the voice detection and the auto-sync of external subtitles, but could be a coincidence… the VOBSUB subtitles in my files no longer work right. The movie keeps playing fine, but the subtitles just freeze and stutter and repeat, never getting past the first few lines.

I mostly watch things on a Roku so that’s where I noticed the issue. I did just test playing the same movie on the computer, and the subtitles still play fine there. I tested on the Android app, and strangely the VOBSUB subtitles don’t show up at all, though I think that’s how it’s been for a long time, I just don’t use it on the phone that much.

Any idea why the VOBSUB subtitles work so differently on different players?

VOBSUB are usually internal (embedded) and the plex subtitle sync doesn’t work on internal subs, only works on external subs. So unless you have external subs on the same video and you’re saying Plex is getting confused and applying the offset adjustment to internal subs?

Are you direct playing or transcoding? There are many reasons why subtitles aren’t showing up. Sometimes the problem is in the video file itself, some incompatibility quirk. Sometimes the problem is with Plex.

How long is a string? lol

Yes the VOBSUBs are all embedded. I know the auto-sync is only for external subtitles. I was just meaning to say that the issue of the embedded subtitles not working correctly on the Roku seems to have started right around the same time I enabled the auto-sync for external subtitles. I also just realized that the embedded subtitles in my TV library are still working fine. The issue only happens on the movie library, which is also the only library where I enabled the voice detection for auto-syncing.

I do have things set to direct play instead of transcode whenever possible, but my understanding (which could be totally wrong) was that there was some transcoding going on anytime subtitles were on.

The Android player is the only place subtitles don’t show up at all, which is fine because I hardly use it anyway. The Roku player is the main problem because that’s where the subtitles show up, but they just keep repeating the first 5 or so things. If I start a movie from the beginning, the subtitles just keep repeating the first 5 or so lines from the beginning. If I stop and then resume, they keep repeating the first 5 or so lines from where I resumed.

It basically depends on whether the client supports that subtitle format. There are some that are perfectly fine with PGS/VOB subs. Some can’t even play basic ASS subs.

Not too long ago Roku had a problem with some SRT subs not showing up. So yeah, lots of things can cause subs not to show up. Sorry I’m no help. I tried playing a movie with VOBsubs on my android and it’s showing up for me.
