Movies are displayed too dark while playing via XBOX One - Can't figure out the problem

Hi there,

if I compare the brightness/contrast of the same movie between the different Plex options (PC/Smart Phone/etc.), all show a perfect result regarding brightness, but Plex via XBox. The latter makes Plex not usable for me.

With Plex running on my XBox One all media is shown way too dark, however the preview screens in the PLEX browser a crisp and high quality.

The problem can’t be my TV since my other multimedia device shows the same movie perfectly bright. The problem should not be the XBox either, since Apps like e.g. Netflix show perfect results via XBox as well.

I am really clueless what I’m doing wrong. I love the PLEX look & feel and would realy like to use it.

Is there anybody out there who can clue me in on that matter?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Mike I have the same or a similar issue, everything seems very dark, as an example trying to watch Terminator Genisys which is dark to begin with. I am new to Plex and some guidance would be appreciated as I am debating on if this is the platform for me, I love the look and feel of Plex but thats all for not if the quality of playback in not good. The video is RAW DVD Rip in an MKV container. Messed with streaming settings on Plex Server and transcode options none seemed to make any difference.

Thanks as well,

Matt

That’s an interesting issue, as we don’t adjust the outputted video brightness. Is the result the same whether the video is direct played or transcoded?

And just to check: When you use the Standard Xbox Media Player app (over DLNA) do the videos also appear too dark or do they have the normal brightness there?

Please check the RGB setting on your XBOX One. If it is set to “Full”, try changing it to “Limited”.

Hi - I have this exact same problem suddenly. Has anyone found a fix? There is nothing wrong with the file and it plays through VLC and DLNA streaming just fine. Netflix and everything else works with no issues. My Plex content is just so dull suddenly.

I was watching a TV show though plex and the first episode played fine but I went to the menu to pick the next and it was really dim. It played the episode dim too. Microsoft media played it fine on the Xbox one. It is like a gray filter goes over the picture to make it dim. Definity some kind of bug with plex on the Xbox one.

I once had an issue where the gray filter “screensaver” the Xbox one will use if you are inactive wouldn’t go away while in the Plex app. A reboot fixed the problem.

If that’s not your issue, i’d suggest your rgb color space is not set correctly for your TV.

I found the same with the AFTV app vs PMP/PHT. The AFTV app produced a very dark picture in comparison to the perfect PHT/PMP. Using the same direct played MKV raw rip of a blu ray.

Just wanted to echo this issue. PMS on mac, streaming raw Blu-ray rip MKV container over hardline to Roku3. Tried messing with tv settings but no dice. I hope it’s not the rip (though I doubt).

Anyone find a fix?

I did have this before, and while I can’t remember the exact steps that I took to fix it, I remember that it was related to the server button.

If you click on the server that you’re using, a dark filter goes over everything but the server list, and I found that sometimes it doesn’t clear the filter when I selected the server, it sometimes took a few times to go back to normal brightness. I also may have selected the server, then went back into the list, hi-lighted the server, and then cancelled out of changing it.

Mess around with the server list to see if that helps.

NCaffo, your “solution” fixed my issue, albeit temporarily. It seems the contrast will be dark for some videos but not for others. Clicking the server button and selecting my server does indeed reset the contract back to normal. Plex, I did not have this issue with versions of the app prior to 1.8.0.0. Can you look in to a fix for this issue? The workaround is relatively simple but when your wife and kid are yelling at you about not being able to watch a movie they really don’t want to hear a bunch of things they need to do to get it displaying correctly again.

Thanks for the bug report! That does sound like a plausible cause for the issue some users have reported. I will look into a fix.

Same issue, was fixed by clicking the Server button and it cleared the dark filter.

Just to say this is still an issue as it happened to me last night using the Xbox One App
Fixed by clicking server button

Id be willing to bet that in the xbox settings panel under display you have set your colour settings to the 32bit or pc rgb options. Put them back to recommended and i think it will go to normal. I did this on mine and thought my TV was breaking. Changed those settings and it was sorted. I kicked myself.

just an fyi this happens if you are in the preview program its a known bug with the system itself due to preview update beng added xbox is aware and is woring on a fix fr several apps hulu does it too so yea xbox will fix in a soon to be update if your in the preview program if not youl needa most likely wait till update goes public

Can confirm that this bug still exists. Running Plex on a MyGica android box and had to log out and log back in to my server and it fixed the issue
