Setup: nVidia Shield TV as Plex Server. All media is on shared folders on a different computer (I have been in the works transitioning from a server to the Shield as my Plex server.) House is wired with gigabit ethernet, and everything that can be wired, is. So the server, the shield, etc all have gigabit connections to each other.
Everything is up and running, but I’m seeing a very weird and very inconsistent, but extremely annoying behavior. Specifically, if I go to play a movie, I get the spinning circle for approximately 25 seconds before the movie starts to play. This is while directly playing - no transcoding at all.
What’s extremely weird about this is that it doesn’t happen on all devices.
Example:
I have two nVidia Shields. One upstairs, one downstairs. Upstairs is the server. I attempt to play a movie on either of the Shields, and it will hang for 25 seconds before starting the movie. However, if I pull out my phone (Pixel 2) and play the same movie, it starts immediately. In every case, it’s direct playing.
I can’t find anything in the logs at all when it hangs, either the client logs or the server ones, but I might just not be able to parse out the important information from the “noise” in the server logs.
This doesn’t happen on every movie or every TV show, but on most of them.
Has anyone ever seen this, or have any suggestions on where to troubleshoot? I’ve rebooted everything, tested the speed of the internal connection (it’s fine, nothing new there), basically tried everything I can think of. I even tried setting up a “brand new” Plex server on the 2nd shield, with one small library - and I got the exact same behavior. Phone plays without any hanging, both Shields sit there for 20+ seconds with a spinning circle before they play.
This never happened when I ran it from my PC. The shields were 100% reliable then and played without ever hanging. I’m about ready to move everything back to it.
