Movies matching incorrectly, and then Fix Match doesn't work

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913
Player Version#: 4.10.1

This anomaly just started after I upgraded to 1.18.0.1913

Most things are matching correctly, but I have had some movies that will not match correctly. In most cases they are #2 #3 or beyond of the movies in the series. For example, Rocky V, or Sniper 3, etc. They match as the first movie, and not the one in the series that they are. Also, Delirious would match as Lost and Delirious, which is the first search result. Further, when I try “Fix Match” the search finds the correct one every time, but it is not the top of the search results. When I select the correct movie it will just exit and not change to the correct one, even after many many tries. On a couple of them they eventually did save, but most of them will never match correctly, neither will they unmatch. I use the “The Movie Database” Agent for matching.

Even though your issue is new to 1.18.0.1913, can you confirm that the affected movies are named in conformance to the guidelines here:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/

For example, Rocky V might be:
C:\Media\Movies\Rocky V (1990).mkv
Or:
C:\Media\Movies\Rocky V (1990)\Rocky V (1990).mkv

Your library folder should point to C:\Media\Movies\ in this example.

If you have extra information you’d like to have in the filename you can place it in square brackets immediately before the extension. For example:
Rocky V (1990) [1080p].mkv

They were not, but I have not put the year like that in the filename since I set up this Plex Server and I have never had this issue before. I have over a thousand movies and only about 20-30 of them have the year in the name like the guidelines suggest, because Playon doesn’t put the year in the name like that in most cases.

I did try that with the Rocky V one and it did match correctly, but that was because once I did that the first search result was the Rocky V, before it was matching with Creed 2 since that was the first search result.

If I had an occasional mismatched one, I could use the Fix Match and match it without any issues. The issue appears to be that the matching is automatically going to the first result in the search, which is not how it has worked, or should work. When using the Fix Match it lets me choose the correct one, but then totally ignores what I selected and matches with the first item returned from the search.

All of my library is from recording with Playon, and Playon does not put the year. That would be something I would have to manually do, which I really don’t want to do if I don’t have to.

This Plex server has been up and running since August of 2013, over 6 years. I have moved it to new hardware in those years - that is all I’ve done with it.

In all those years I have never seen this behavior, it was only this past week. I have had mismatched titles occasionally, but like I said, the Fix Match has always worked and fixed the match.

Also - in addition to the above - Unmatch does not work anymore either.

I cannot comment on why it worked for you previously and does not now; perhaps something changed in the parsing logic. However, I can say that I’ve not ever experienced any matching issues with movies:

  • Present in The Movie DB’s database, and
  • Named according to the guidelines I linked earlier.

With regard to renaming your media files such that they conform, you can use Filebot to help you out:
https://www.filebot.net

As for Fix Match not accepting your choice, I’ve no idea why that would be.

One other quick note: If your files are mp4/m4a you may want to check to see if they have embedded metadata. That could potentially affect the matching. If so, you can try moving Local Media Assets down the priority list in your Agents configuration (Settings -> Agents). Check to see which agent your library is configured to use and adjust that one.

Thank you for your help. I went and checked and it turns out I actually had Local Media Assets turned off completely. I have gotten the issues resolved with the ones causing issues by adding the year like is shown in the guidelines. I will just keep an eye on it going forward to see how it goes.

Well, wanted to update in case anyone comes across this and had the same frustration I did.

I ended up having constant issues with this server today. It would stop responding (even locally) over and over all day. I stopped nearly everything else, rebooted multiple times and within about an hour of nothing going on on the server it would stop responding. The CPU was constantly being pushed to 100% with Plex taking most of it, even if I shut other things off, it would take up whatever was available until it was spiking at 100% again. While it was still responding I tried to play a movie from my phone on the same network. The first time it caused the server to stop responding so I rebooted. The second time it took about 2 minutes to even get the movie to start, then it seemed to play fine for the most part.

I also had one movie, that no matter what I did it would not match correctly. I created a new library and it matched fine immediately, but as soon as I moved it back into the bigger library, it went right back to the old problem (shown above in the thread)

I ran maintenance on the database, emptied trash, etc - everything I could think about.

I finally had had enough, I back-revved it to the previous version.

Immediately, my problems are gone!

That movie matched incorrectly at first, but I did a Fix Match and it immediately fixed the match like it has the last 6 years.

I started that same movie, started playing in about 2 seconds, like normally. I tried another movie just in case that one was cached on my phone a little bit, and it started within a couple seconds as well.

And so far, it has kept responding fine, overnight will tell when my backups run, but I am optimistic.

I just discovered this thread because my plex server would not match new movies correctly.
I was running plex server 1.18.0.1944 on a QNAP TS-453 Pro.
As I said it would not match new movies.
And Fix Match option is broken, the Auto Match dropdown showed nothing. There used to be 3 items in the list which I could choose: Personal Media, Plex Movie, The Movie Database.
With plex server 1.18.0.1944 the Dropdown box was empty.
Now I just installed the previous server version 1.18.0.1913, and now it can match movies correctly again.
And the Auto Match dropdown box now has the 3 items again.
The 1.18.0.1944 version seems to be broken.
