I’ve noticed that 2 movies do not show up in the library, either if I display All Movies or if I search for the movie name.
What’s strange is that at the top of the movies display, the number of movies matches the number of files in the directory, even though 2 aren’t showing.
The number at the top of the library page represents the number of visible items… not the number of files. It can vary from the number of files if Plex considers multiple files to be different quality versions of the same movie, part of a stacked movie (1 movie split across multiple files)… or if your library is hiding/displaying items contained in a collection (and the collection items themselves).
###Strategies to find “missing“ files:
sort your library by Date Added to see if a recently added item’s been mismatched as a different movie —> fix match should sort that
filter your library for Duplicates to identify if a file has been identified as a different-quality version of another item… if you found a duplicate, check the item details (e.g. edit > info or context menu > get info)… —> you can split such bad matches and subsequently fix match for the previously incorrect match
display the library by Folders and navigate to the folder of the missing movie… this should contain the item as which the file‘s been mismatched
Mostly those issues happen if files aren’t names/organized according to the supported naming schema.
I’d already done the 3 points you made, but everything was correct. Well, as correct as I ever do it. I’ve always just named the file as the movie title with everything in a single folder, which has always worked up to now.
So I tried adding the year to the title. That found one of them. I then went and looked at the naming conventions, which I’ll be honest I haven’t looked at in forever. Now I see I can add the IMDB reference, which then found the other. Although I would have thought a file named “Top Gun” should have been easy to recognise.
There are hundreds of movies that have exactly the same name, similar names, or that start with the same words. Adding the year to the file name helps Plex know which one you want to match.
Less common are movies with the same name released in the same year. Adding the IMDB/TMDB ID helps in those instances.
Well, other times I’ve had a movie that there are multiple versions, Plex still adds it and guesses which it is, which I then go in with a Fix Match. This is the first time it hasn’t done that.
