I noticed that the movie “Five Fingers of Death (1972)” wasn’t in my plex collection even though it was with other movies in one of my folders. I ran the “scan library files” but that didn’t help. I moved the movie out of the folder then ran the “scan library files” again, then emptied the trash. I then added the movie back to the folder and scanned, but it still didn’t show up. I again moved the movie out of the folder and ran the “scan library files”, emptied the trash, and moved the movie to a different folder containing more movies i have on plex. (i have several folders with movies, all of the movies are in one plex library) When i scanned again, the movie started to show up…i saw the title of the movie and above that was a screenshot from the movie, so I was expecting a movie poster to follow, but the thing just disappeared again. It takes about 3 minutes to run a scan, I guess because i have a lot of movies…so this is starting to take a lot of time. I renamed the movie folder and file to “Five Feet Apart (2019)” and scanned again. The movie started to show up with the title Five Feet Apart but then disappeared again before the poster was added. I removed the movie from the folder, scanned, deleted the trash, changed the title back to “Five Fingers of Death (1972)”, added the movie back to another folder, and when the movie started to appear again i quickly clicked on it and clicked on “match” or “fix match” (i forget which) to see if i could get it to stay. So that seemed to work, and now the movie is there on plex with a poster, but plex has it listed as 1973, even though my folder and file are both named “Five Fingers of Death (1972)” and the movie database shows it as 1972. Clicking on “fix match” and choosing it to search “the movie database” doesn’t make it show the correct date. I don’t know how or when that movie disappeared from my plex collection or if it ever did show up, but I added that move to plex a long time ago…today i was looking to add some kung fu movies to plex and when i saw that movie wasn’t in my collection, i thought it was strange so i looked thru my folders and saw it was there with the other movies…so now i guess i need to go thru all my movie folders every month or so to see if any movies somehow get removed from my plex collection … i’m not sure if it’s all worth the time and trouble. I still have hundreds of movies and tv shows to move from my dvds to my plex collection
You’re certainly in the race for the “wall-of-text award” (July 2021 edition)
There’s different methods to investigate a mismatched / missing movie:
- You can find movies that have been added and is matched to an existing item using the
Duplicatesfilter - You can find movies that have been added but incorrectly matched by sorting your library by the date added
- If the item isn’t added at all… Five Fingers of Death (1972) - Release Dates — The Movie Database (TMDb)
Most of the time, such mismatches are based on file naming / folder structures misleading Plex.
As for your specific release year (Five Fingers of Death)… it appears this movie aired in the US in 1973
Hi. I later noticed that although the movie database shows “Five Fingers of Death (1972)”, underneath in smaller letters it has “03/20/1973 (US)Action 1h 44m”.
Maybe later I’ll put the title as “Five Fingers of Death (1973)” to see what happens, but not until i have a bit more spare time because if the movie disappears from my Plex library it might be a bit of a hassle to get it back again.
Both the folder and the file is named “Five Fingers of Death (1972)”
i moved it around to different folders which didn’t help, and the folder structure is ok since other movies in the same folders show up in plex. I don’t have a duplicate of that movie, and if i did, i don’t understand why that would make the movie disappear from plex. With two of the same, plex just puts a number 2 in the corner of the poster.
…so i guess the case of “the missing movie that plex has a difficult time adding even though it shows up in the movie database” will remain a mystery. …but the movie is currently still showing up in plex, so it’s ok for now. Now that i know that can happen, some day I’ll go thru my movies to see if plex has left out any others.
… thanks for your help and taking the time to answer…
Force the match by including the ID number of the IMDb or of the TheMovieDB into the file name. Naming and organizing your Movie files | Plex Support
And stick to one movie per subfolder.
Hi,
I think your movie is not missing, but is labeled with another name in your library, and not well recognized, that’s why it doesn’t do anything if you move it from different folder to another.
You should put it out of the folder of your library, scan the library, then search the film with a “trashcan” on it, to know what was the wrong label.
Then you put the film back in the folder library, scan again, and do the manual association with the film
Hope my explanations are clear :s
I had something similar with a movie that was labelled as 1982 but was only recognised under another year (1986). When I added the “correct” year all was well, for those playing at home it’s called Walter.
Think it relates to the agent.
Thanks! I never knew about that ID number… so I renamed the file and folder “Five Fingers of Death (1973) {tmdb-21964}” and rescanned plex and it shows up in my plex movie collection. I think that idea could come in handy later.
I don’t know what you mean by “stick to one movie per subfolder” but my folders go like
“top-folder” …then i have another folder within that folder, let’s call it “sub-folder” and i have a bunch of movies in the “sub-folder”…each movie file is in it’s own folder and the movie folder is named the same as the file name…for example
top-folder
sub-folder
Five Fingers of Death (1973) {tmdb-21964}
Five Fingers of Death (1973) {tmdb-21964}.mp4
Little Dragon Maiden (1983)
Little Dragon Maiden (1983).mp4
the above example just shows one top-folder and one sub-folder with 2 movies in that sub-folder, but i have about 8 top-folders, with more than one sub-folder in a top-folder and a lot of movies in each sub-folder…and i only add the top folders to the plex library…plex finds them all that way…but i’ll go thru them to see if any more are missing and if there are any more missing I"ll use your ID number idea. Thanks
thanks for helping but i don’t think that was the problem…the movie is showing up now
thanks power …if i have a similar problem i will remember to make sure the year is correct…i think the ID number idea from Ottokerner will over ride that to fix the issue though…
also i see a pop up box that says next time i reply, i should just make one reply to all instead of several individual replies
That’s what I meant. Some ppl don’t bother to create a subfolder for every individual movie, which sometimes makes it harder to get a proper match.
