Movies Won’t Play Smoothly When PGS Subs are enabled

Hi, I have noticed that all movies which require subtitles play perfectly fine without the subtitles turn on, but when I turn them on the movie then keeps stopping and buffering, the subtitles are in PGS format. I have tried to figure out how to Demux the MKV and then convert the subs to SRT, then Remux them back again to no avail, please can someone shed some light here.

I would have thought Plex could handle PGS subtitles natively as it’s most commonly ripped from Blu-ray?

Plex can handle them, as long as it has sufficient computing power available on the server.
If your server is weak however, you need to pick a Plex client type which can handle this subtitle format on its own. But there are not many. Plex for Windows, Plex for Mac, Plex Media Player and Plex for Nvidia shield are the only clients which I know of.
All other cannot handle PGS nor VOBSUB and need help from the server for displaying them.

Subtitle Edit and MKVToolNix

Hi there thanks for your suggestions but my computer is more then powerfully enough, it’s running an intel i7 processor has 64Gb of Ram and a top end 4K GeForce graphics card, so I don’t think it’s the servers power that’s an issue here, Plex really should just support it!

I have the server running in one room and my LG Oled webos TV in the other connected by Powerlines, 2000 mbps so there is also no network lag I have tested it!

Hmm so how do we get around Plex not being capable to handle PGS subs.

Anyone?

The LG Plex app cannot direct play image based subtitles such as PGS or VOBSUB. If you enable either then PMS will transcode the video.

The LG Plex app will direct play SRT subtitles.

However, if the audio is transcoding and SRT subtitles are enabled, then the video will also transcode.

This is a limitation of the Plex app on LG WebOS TVs. I believe the same limitation applies to Samsung TVs (I don’t own a Samsung, so cannot personally verify).

The solution is to either structure your media or structure your system to avoid audio & video transcoding.

To structure your media, use Handbrake, SubEdit, and similar tools to ensure your MKV/MP4/etc files contain only tracks that will direct play on your clients.

To structure your system, choose Plex clients, audio components, and video components that direct play the media in your library.

For example (my setup):
Nvidia Shield <–HDMI–> Denon Receiver <–HDMI–> LG B7 OLED

The Shield direct plays my movies & TV shows, including those with PGS, VOBSUB, & SRT subtitles. It bitstreams the audio to the Denon, and the Denon passes the video to the LG.
The Denon handles all audio types in my library. This ensures no audio transcoding.
The LG handles all video types in my library (H.264, H.265 up to 4K). This ensures no video transcoding.

Other clients, receivers, TVs, etc can be used depending on your individual needs.

There is a whole range of I7 CPUs. Which do you have?

Without a Plex Pass, you cannot use the QuickSync unit in your CPU, nor the graphics card to help with transcoding.
