Need help: plex + pgs subtitles

Hi all,

I can’t get plex and movies with pgs subtitltes working.
I read that it may be possible transcoding them, but when I transcode the resulting .mp4 file don’t have any subtitles.
What’s the recommended way to handle the pgs subtitles?

Thanks!

Two ways to make it work:

  1. remux the MP4 together with the PGS subs into one MKV File

  2. Put the PGS subtitle through an OCR converter so that the result is a SRT file

I already have a mkv containing the video stream and the subtitles.
the problem is that plex can’t play the mkv. When I activate the subtitles the video freezes and plex crashes.

Which OCR converter do you recommend?

Where is your server running on?
Which type of Plex client are you using?

For Windows I can recommend Subtitle Edit (But don’t download the newest version. Use 3.5.6 instead)

They say that ffmpeg even has the ability (but I don’t know how accurate it is).

I was planing this weekend on upgrading my copy to the latest. Is there something wrong with 3.5.7? or is it a rule not to download the newest?

I had a bad experience with it. There is a completely new OCR engine in it, and instead of improving the accuracy of the character recognition, it made it far worse.

Oh damn. Thanks for the heads up.

Where is your server running on?

The server is running on my synology NAS.
I’m using the Plex client for Samsung TV.

You have one of the most unfortunate combinations of server hardware, client device and media file format…
PGS subs are not supported by the Samsung, so the server needs to transcode and “burn” those into the video picture.
And many Syno NAS boxes are simply too weak to do that.

Realistically, option 2 from above is your best bet.
(Unless you want to optimize/pretranscode all your files and burn in all those subtitles during the process.)

Thanks for the explanation.

How can I pretranscode the files? I’d like to try

Will optimize burn the sub into the video? If so, how would you set that in plex or will plex just “know” based on all your predefined (assuming the correct) settings?

Go to the preplay page of a movie
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202462186-viewing-item-details/

Make sure that the right subtitle stream for that movie is already selected.
If it isn’t, select one.
(you might want to revise the ‘language and subtitle settings’ in your account http://172.29.0.1:32400/web/index.html#!/settings/account so subtitles are selected automatically, if present)

Then start Optimization of that movie.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/plex-media-server/media-optimizer/

It will depend a bit on the optimization profile you choose.
AFAIR all profiles except the ‘smart TV’ profile will trigger a burn-in of the subs.
