Moving DVR Content to Plex Library

I’d like to be able to get one of the TV cards (looking at the WinTV-quadHD) to start recording some TV shows. What I’d really like to do, though, is take some of those recordings, trim the commercials from the front and back end of the show, and move them into the Plex library.

Is this doable? How difficult would it be? I’m assuming the file format that the videos are recorded in is a common enough format that I’ll be able to find software to edit, then resave the file and put them into my library.

Is there anything I’m not thinking of or taking into account on this?

If it’s a Plex supported card and you use Plex DVR. Plex will automatically add the recordings into it’s library when complete. As for the commercials Plex has the ability to use a post processing script which can be scripted to use software such as comskip which will automatically remove commercials based on settings in the comskip file.

Yes it is doable. Depending on what OS you are running will determine the complexity. Comskip can remove commercials, ffmpeg and handbrake can be used to transcode the video recorded by Plex to another format you want. If you are running Windows mcebuddy can be used to handle all of this as soon as the video is finished recording. I do not use the card you mentioned I am using the SiliconDust HDHR network tuners.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I am running windows. I’ll have to checkout Comskip to see how that would work for me. MCEBuddy looks pretty awesome, too.

So the recordings automatically go into one of the regular libraries? What I’m trying to do is record some kids shows off PBS and pull them into a library that I have for my kids to watch. l

Once DVR is created you should be able to select your Kids library or a TV Show library to record to.
