Moving from NAS server to Desktop server

Hello,

I currently have Plex server set up on a Qnap Server but I am thinking of selling it and just run my plex server on my windows desktop.

It has I7 9700 non-k and 16 GB ram. The media content is stored on internal hard drives (s-ata III 5400 rpm) only used for this purpose. My OS is on a separate SSD.

I live alone so there would never be more then one stream running during moments when I am also working on my computer. Gaming and Plex streaming would never happen together.

Is there any downside making this move (aside from the increased power usage which I need to calculate but think will be ok).

My biggest concern is initiating streaming (especially outside of LAN) when the PC is in sleep mode which it always is when not used for 30 minutes.

I assume I would need to set up some kind of wake on LAN? Is there a functionality for that inside Plex?

Also I read some people use freeNAS. Is there any benefit for that opposed to just running it without?

You need to find a way to wake up your server from outside your home network, or you will have major issues there.
If your router has a way to generate a magic packet, triggered when a certain action on the internet-facing side is performed, it might work.
But Plex as such has no way to generate magic packets – particularly not when the client is outside the LAN.
