Moving Library from NAS to Mac: user:group plex:plex

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: n/a

I’ve been running PMS on Synology NAS and in a process of moving the Library to my Mac running on Catalina. So far I backed up my source Library successfully and moved it to my Mac but where I created user:group called “plex”; however I’m not so sure if I’m supposed to run the PMS as plex or my own user name.

Am I supposed to run the PMS as plex user or my own user ID?

I’ve visited the below links for my own homework, however I can’t find anything related to the plex group name.

to backup the library on my NAS I referred to the below links

I am sorry but I disagree. A Mac is as perfect a UNIX system as any Linux system is. Including permissions and such.

And I migrated an installation forth and back. Hence, it must work.

On your NAS PMS was run by the user plex which belongs to the group plex or nobody.

Unfortunately under Mac OS PMS is not a server process but runs in user space. I.e. the files from /var/lib/plexmediaserver go to ~/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server. However, Preferences.xml goes into ~/Library/Preferences/. You have to make the loggin user the owner of these files.

Unfortunately, I am not at home right now. Hence, I am not able to check whether I spelled everything correctly. But it is all straight forward.

If I may augment Trumpy here.

While I don’t own a Mac (may have the wrong terms here)…

  1. PMS does run as your username on MacOS (change owner & group to you)
  2. You should recognize the familiar ~/Library/Application Support/<Application Name> structure. (PMS primary initial development was done on MacOS all those years ago and the first ports to other platforms kept the naming structure)
  3. If you remember to turn off all the automatic scanning & other Library features, it should be Ok. (tar ball works great: tar cf /some/path/file.tar ./Library)

No need to do that.

It turns out I was wrong. Preferences.xml remains in ~/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/

The plist file in ~/Library/Preferences stores different information.

I would definitely recommend a clean install as being the best solution. There nothing better on a Mac. So I totally agree with Trumpy.

thank you very much for your suggestions. I don’t mind losing the watched movies history, but is there anyway to keep the Collection setup, posters, tagging etc…?
