Dear all,
I have to reinstall my Ubuntu-Machine and want to backup all PMS-Content (including the artwork like scanned covers / posters, and the state, which movies are seen, and which not).
Can someone describe that please? I have red, that I have to backup the preferences.xml, but I think that’s not all …
Thanks a lot
Tom
You only need to backup Plex Media Server data directory (Plex Media Server data directory location ). The easiest way is to make a tarball so you have one file.
Example:
sudo tar -cvpzf PMS_Backup.tar.gz /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server
Backup the file and then extract it when you have installed PMS again.
sudo tar -xvpzf PMS_Backup.tar.gz

Thanks a lot, Alehandro. I did this already and it worked
You want to do this while the server is not running.
Otherwise, there is a high likelyhood that the primary database file is damaged in the backup.

If I may offer the How-To?
Backing up your PMS data involves the same steps you’ll need if you were to clone your PMS and take to a new computer, reinstall the operating system, or just want a backup for safe keeping.
Stop PMS
Invoke the root shell
Create the backup image
[chuck@lizum ~.74]$ sudo sh
sh-4.4# cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver
sh-4.4# tar cfz /nas/tmp/PlexBackup.tar.gz ./Library
sh-4.4# ls -la /nas/tmp/PlexBackup.tar.gz
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 864050144 Oct 29 15:29 /nas/tmp/PlexBackup.tar.gz
sh-4.4#
Copy …
