Moving library from one NAS to another on Shield PLEX server

Hello

I am using Shield as a PLEX server to play movies on a WD EX2 Ultra NAS and it works fine. My current NAS being too small I plan to move all library to a new one (PR4100) but would like to know how to do that without losing all the meta data (played/ not played, collections, etc).

If I understand well the datas are stored on the SHIELD right ? so I should just be able to change the source of the library ? But I am afraid to lose everything (already happened once when I changed the server from a NAS to a SHIELD).
Please explain like I am 4 years old, ok maybe 10 years old

Thank you in advance for any useful answer.

This article should apply to your use case…

Hi Tom,

thank you for this super quick answer, I read all given there but still not sure what to do about the Plex Web App.

I am working on mac, so here is what I understood what I should do.

  1. Open Plex on my mac
  2. go to settings → Library → uncheck "empty trash automatically after every scan
  3. my stuff is already copied to the other NAS, so no need of closing and reopening as both NAS have exactly the same content for now.
This is the point I am not sure of :
  4. go to Settings → Librairies → Select each library and click Edit Library → Add Folders → delete the old library and add the new location.

isn’t this going to delete all the meta data ?

Not with automatic emptying of trash disabled.

Thank you Tom, your solution does not erase meta data,

but it doesn’t work like that as I cannot find the new NAS by just following the steps you showed me in the article.

In point 4 of my listing, when I should select in which folder my library is, the NAS does not show up. I can only see the old one. And this is because I need to link the new NAS with shield BEFORE changing the PLEX library location settings.

This is a point that should be added in the article you sent me. What to do when using Shield, if the storage intern, USB or NAS, then do this or that… etc.

Anyway for the Shield users out there, here is the procedure :

Before doing anything with PLEX :

  1. Open Shield settings → Devices preferences → Storage → Mount Network Storage. If the NAS is on the same network as the Shield, it should appear,
  2. Select the NAS and chose admin connection (not sure guest works here) then connect.

then when you’ll try to find the right library folder, the PLEX admin will show you the NAS you just linked to the Shield, just follow the path and set the library, after you save, library update automatically and the data is still there !!! youhouou !!

thank you Tom, enjoy your day.

Well ok so after switching library locations, my library data is not perfect…

  1. all my TV shows display the red bin icon, although the files are there, how do I fix that ?
  2. all the movies that did not match at first and then were match fixed or manually match became “orhpan” again so I had to manually match them again.
  3. now I get an error message when trying to put all the movies that went out of their collections…

so not that simple
