Moving Plex server from NAS to Shield

This might seem like an illogical decision at first but there is a good reason for it.

Has anyone done this - if so are these the correct steps (I have referenced the Plex guide for moving PMS but there are no instructions for NAS > SHIELD.

  1. Stop the server on both devices
  2. Copy “Plex Media Server” from NAS (DSM7) to Shield (external USB drive setup with PMS)
  3. Start the server on Shield
  4. Sign out and back in PMS
  5. Remap the library

I had a lot of trouble with permissions and symbolic link errors till I worked out the file system on the Shield external USB drive formatted by Plex is Fat 32 which from my understanding doesn’t support permissions - connecting the ext, drive to a PC and copying via Windows 10 worked.

For anyone interested I am trying to prove a theory that PMS is corrupting its database on Shield, causing a blowout on metadata storage to what seems like 2-3TBs for the complete Plex Media Server folder.

In several tests the same folder with same indexed data and identical PMS settings is 10-15 times smaller when completely indexed by the NAS.

thanks in advance
