Moving my Plex server to different Linux Solid State Drive

Hello. I have recently had to rebuild the system that had my local Plex server (Linux Mint 19) on a new Solid State Drive. I didn’t use the same hostname. I then copied over the files in my home directory as well as the Movies location. When I start Plex Server and try to view my local movies, I see the old name server with a can’t connect error and the new name with no movies under it. Can you tell me where this information is stored so I can get it working again?

With copying the the Plex data folder, you also copied the Preferences.xml.
This is holding the globally unique server ID. Now you have two machines with the same ID.
You need to remove the ID from one of the servers and let Plex create a new ID during the “claiming” procedure.

For whatever reason, that didn’t fix the issue. I scan my videos which are in a directory with permissions of 755 and each video is 644. The path is correct from what I can tell. Still I go to view the movies, and see this error:

There was an unexpected error loading this library

Is there some other requirement that I am missing. For whatever reason, it seems overly complex to re-scan my library. I must be missing something. Could it be that the sql is corrupted?

Another issue I see is that I click to scan the library, and it never finishes. I let it set for 24 hours and still see “Cancel scan”.

I am going to suggest something very unpleasant; Walk away from Mint & use Ubuntu.

  1. Mint is not supported; Ubuntu is
  2. Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu and just enough different to historically “flake out” for no reason whatsoever

I’ve never been able to figure out what they do to it but whatever it is – it’s enough to make it unstable.

Case after case of Mint not working magically goes away when Mint is abandoned in favor of Ubuntu mainstream

Ah, say it ain’t so. I love Mint. It is so much nicer than Ubuntu. Will consider that after I have exhausted all other avenues.

May I see some log files?

  1. Verify DEBUG loggging is on, VERBOSE is off
  2. Restart PMS
  3. Wait 2 minutes
  4. Recreate the problem
  5. Download the logs
  6. Attach the ZIP

Now we can hopefully see what’s happening

Here are the logs.(File removed)

You have to get media out of your home directory on Mint – it doesn’t allow that.

Create a separate directory on /home, which you own (it’ll be neutral because it’s not a “Home” directory for any user, and put media there. Fix permissions so you have full control and Plex can read/execute

You’re running this server entirely WiFi? This is strongly discouraged. Performance will suffer badly (only 1 device can transmit at a time on WiFI – player making a request or server sending a block – aka. half-duplex. wired is full duplex)

Ding, ding! We have a winner!!! I didn’t see that I couldn’t use a user’s home directory on Mint. Thanks so much! You are awesome.
