I am running the latest Plex Media Server (Premium) on a WD MyCloud PR4100. I recently purchased a Synology DS1019+ with 4 ea 14TB drives. I want to move everything onto the Synology and reuse the WD server for other purposes. While moving things I want to clean up how the movies (particularly the different movie collections such as James Bond, Bourne series, Star Wars, etc) are stored and displayed. Same with my music.
What is the best way to go about this? Should I set up Plex on the Synology first then create the new library’s and just copy files to a new area on the Synology or what?
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gregory
If you really want to give your library a makeover, you might be best off by doing this in a clean setup.
Personally I’d start with moving and structuring my media to/on the Diskstation (e.g. creating library folders in the system videos
folder). When done, install the server app and go through the setup.
If you want to look into an actual migration, check out this support article
Also… if you don’t mix up the setup too much, you might be able to save view states and ratings to the new server (without doing a full migration)
That is sort of what I was thinking as well. I guess I was a little confused as to whether I would need to uninstall my Plex account on the WD once I got the new folders and structure set up and ready to set Plex up on the Diskstation. In other words “untie” any references to the older WD and Plex so it doesn’t get confused when I try to set up Plex on the Diskstation.
No need to uninstall your 2nd/original Plex Media Server.
If you start from scratch… just make sure you use a different server name and connect via the Synology’s local IP address for the initial setup (http://[DiskStation IP]:32400/web – not via http://app.plex.tv/desktop). Once the setup is done and you have claimed the new server for your Plex account, it should also show nicely in your clients and the online version of Plex Web.
Just a quick “THANK YOU”. Your reply (in addition to being quick) was very helpful in putting my mind at ease and that I was on the right track. Learning all of this, while fun, can be overwhelming sometimes to make sure we don’t take one step forward and two back!
I will follow your advice as well as review the two articles you referenced.
Again, thank you very much!!
