Multi-episode tv-shows: Files incorrectly recognized

Hi gurus

I have this entire TV show where one episode i named “TV Show - s03e11-e12.mkv”

This is recognized in a way so there’s an offset for all the following episodes. Episode 13 is displayed with the information from Episode 14 and so on. I have tried creating a new library and moving the entire show to the new library but without any luck. Playing episode #13 will show the double episode #11+12 again :-/

Is there any way to manually fix incorrect matches for TV shows?

I think I read somewhere that I could also move the entire show away from Plex. Wait for the cleanup to run (after about a week) and then move it back. Is that really my best option?

Thanks but this will not help Plex recognize the episodes any better will it? The episode in question DID have the actual episode title in its name before I renamed it to try to alleviate the problem…

Filebot (link in my signature) will ‘pre-match’ your show with TVDB. It will get the names of the episodes from TVDB and then rename your files to be in complete compliance with TVDB and Plex naming standards with no questions, no guesswork, no shenannigans.

Here is the typical layout Plex and TVDB expect to see:

A TV Show Library/
…TV Show Name/ <---- exactly as it is listed at TVDB: http://thetvdb.com/
…Season 01/
…TV Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title Optional.xxx

What is the show?
What is the show structure as it sits in your library?
Does the file actually contain both episodes: 11 and 12?

You should note that if you use this naming Plex thinks (wrongly) after you have watched episode 11 and 12 that you still need to watch episode 12. There are a couple of ways around that:

  1. manually mark episode 12 as watched
  2. rename the file s03e11
2a) the next file will, of course be: s03e13

Now here is the community developed work-around for a Plex naming scheme that has never worked right since day number one:
Split that file apart and make it two episodes - easily done in a couple of minutes:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/173648/howto-splitting-multi-episode-files-with-mkvtoolnix-gui

Note: don’t expect MKVToolNix to make a very accurate edit, but it will be close. Try to make the best edit you can and live with the result. It will be less painful in the long run than having to battle Plex every time it runs across a double episode it can’t effectively deal with.

When you are changing names, structures and the like while the items are still in the library this will most likely not change a thing inside that bundle. Since the day Plex’s Mom dropped him out of her on that subway platform (a saintly Woman, prehaps a bit hygienically challenged) Plex simply can’t (maybe head trauma) update a bundle with new information via a simple ‘Refresh’ - like it says in the Plex Handbook. In this particular instance that Plex Handbook is as worthless as screen doors on a submarine (teats on a boar hog - inject your own colorful analogy here).

The Community developed yet another work around:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove entire show from library
  2. update library
  3. clean bundles
  4. empty trash
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <---- update libraries, clean bundles, empty trash
  5. make any changes necessary to repair/alter/fix file names and structures to be as perfect as possible
  6. replace show into library
  7. update library

Failure to follow these steps exactly and in the order they are presented will result in - not much - because it’s the ONLY way to reset a bundle.

First of all thanks for a very elaborate answer. I really appreciate it.

My structure is like this:

A TV Show Library/
…TV Show Name/ <---- exactly as it is listed at TVDB: http://thetvdb.com/
…S01/
…TV Show Name - S01E01.xxx

So no episode name. I’ll run Filebot when I get home from work today.

Does the file actually contain both episodes: 11 and 12?

Episode #11+12 is a double episode named

TV Show Name - s01e11-e12.xxx

I’ll try to follow your steps.

Thanks again!

It should be TV Show Name - S01E11E12.

No, the correct file name is:
TV Show Name - S03E11-E12.xxx
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows
but that still won’t make it work any better in Plex. Plex is dumb-struck when it comes to multiple episodes - hence the community developed work-around.

This will ultimately produce undesirable/unpredictable results as it runs contrary to the Plex Guidelines for TV Show Naming and Structuring:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

For absolute clarity, I repeat:

A TV Show Library/
…TV Show Name/ <---- exactly as it is listed at TVDB: http://thetvdb.com/
…Season 01/
…TV Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title Optional.xxx

Here is how most of us deal with those dastardly ‘joined’ episodes that Plex can’t deal with on it’s own:

Specifically:

…S01E01…
…S01E03…

This will ‘de-confuse’ Plex.

whoops sorry my bad. was at work so didn’t check thoroughly.

Okay so I’ve tried to use Filebot. I think I figured out what my problem is (I think)… the show is The Office (US) and in Season 3 episode 11+12 is a double episode. TheTVDB (and therefore Filebot) incorrectly matches this single 42 mins episode as both episode 11, 12 and 13 and therefore names it “A Benihana Christmas + Back from Vacation”. The following episodes are offset by one.

I’ve manually renamed the episodes but as Plex uses TheTVDB as an agent there’s not much I can do. Apart from maybe waiting for the TVMaze bundle to be completed.

Thanks for all your help guys  Thumbs up!

Well, I would check that at TVDB, but once again (second day in row) TVDB is offline.

I’ll take your word for it.

If you’re a glutton for punishment you could use MKVToolNix to join episode 13 to 11 and 12, but I would really suggest at that point to name them:
s03e11
next
s03e14

and shoot right by any Plex-induced-madness that would probably occur if you tried to name them something clever. Why not just join them all together and make a giant movie out of them?

Create a listing at TMDB:
The Office Season 3 Gonzo Marathon (2016)
Runtime: 11 Hours

It’s back up. And from there (https://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=73244&seasonid=16312&lid=7) I can see that they consider episode #10 to be “A Benihana Christmas” and #11 to be “Back from Vacation” whereas epguides.com (The Office (US) (a Titles & Air Dates Guide)) has both #10+#11 as “A Benihana Christmas” and #12 is “Back from Vacation”.

So… to actually fix my issue couldn’t I just “reduce” season 3 from 24 to 23 episodes? and rename the files to follow TVDB? That way my metadata would be updated correct… correct?

The Office Season 3 Gonzo Marathon (2016)

Sounds like a good plan! But nah… I think I’ll stick to what I’ve got

TVDB is Plex’s Primary TV Show database - so yea, I would stick with them for the least amount of pain and suffering.

Filebot will (as long as TVDB stays on the air) pre-match and re-name your episodes according to the TVDB database so there’s no guesswork involved. Epguides (whatever that is) isn’t even listed as part of FileBot’s associated databases and AFAIK will be of no help from within Plex.

Please just let Plex mark both as watched and skip to the next unwatched, kid’s cartoons are really bad with this, and sometimes my son asks for a certain episode, but it’s impossible to find if it’s in the 2nd half, since I now name my episodes s01e01[-02] - description.mp4 to avoid the constant battle where plex will play the same file twice.

Garfield is even worse, as it’s 3 episodes in 1 file…

Considering users have been begging for something to be done about this for - what? - 5 years? - 10? - better find a work-around that works and use it.

I’ve been trying to figure this out all day. I just earned my 2 year badge, so yay me! Well, I’m adding The Twilight Zone (2002) to my server. The naming for the files are “F:\TV Shows\The Twilight Zone (2002)\The Twilight Zone (2002) - S01E01 - show name.avi”. I thought I solved the problem when I noticed a space between the season and episode. That didn’t solve my problem. I checked tvdb and they have 44 episodes. I have 43. So I found out e11 and 12 was combined in my library. It’s called the lineman (1) and the lineman (2) on tvdb. So I changed the name on episode 11 to S01E11-E12. Now it shows 44 episodes in my library and has them in the correct order with correct names. My problem is; I still cannot analyze the show. When I check the show info, it only has summary in the general tab. I can’t get passed analyze to fix match because it analyzes for 10 minutes and doesn’t match anything. I don’t know how to fix this. Every show I have added, works fine. I have learned a lot about Plex in the last 2 years. This has me stumped. When I fixed the match on my twilight zone from the 80s, one of the options was the 2002 series, so I know it’s in tvdb. Please help. Losing my mind! Tyty

The plot thickens…

Ok so there is no metadata on the show. There is no background, no info, the drop down only shows analyze and not fix match. Here’s the kicker… I check it on client side and it has the poster, background, all the metadata, background music, description, etc. what an error! Nobody would ever know, but I know. It’s still eating away at me trying to find the error. Might be with Plex. Could it be the number of episodes? 44 is a lot for a single season. I’m gonna try to put it out of my mind. I don’t think there is a quick fix for it. Would this cause database lag?
