I recently picked up the ‘Star Trek Captain’s Log Fan Collective’ DVD set for cheap. I’ve got it digitized, and now I’m trying to figure out how on earth to get it into Plex. Here’s the Amazon listing for it, for context: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P5FH44.
It has 3 episodes from each of the first 5 series (we don’t talk about that one, it doesn’t exist), and several bonus features. I’d like to be able to keep it all together, maybe with a “season” for each of the shows. There’s one show per disc (TOS disc 1, TNG disc 2, etc), and all of the bonus features on each disk are “new” (at the time the set was produced) and tied to that disc’s series. And some of the episodes have intros by the relevant captain/commander in front of them, so they don’t exactly line up with the episodes in the actual series listings.
I’ve got no issues with putting in the time to input everything into a new “series” over at thetvdb.com, assuming they have no issues with it. But I don’t know if that’s the right route to go. Any suggestions or advice would definitely be welcomed! (Well, except for a snarky ‘just get rid of it,’ perhaps, lol)
I‘m very confident, they have an issue with listing it as another show, given its episodes of existing shows with bonus content.
Have you considered simply placing the episodes as themselves (even if their random picks from different seasons of different series)? You could then just add the bonus content as extras of the respective show, season or episode (e.g. episode specific intros by the cast / captain…). You can check if some of the bonus content has an own listing as special episodes in TheTVDb.
If you’ve already got the shows, you could even keep those as-is, just adding the bonus content to those.
If you want to keep a separate entry point in your library to watch just the content of that compilation, you could create a collection of those episodes. That won’t work with all the bonus content if you have added it as local extras… but you can group even those by adding them to a playlist.
@Gosherm I just ran into the same issue when I was trying to get my copy of Star Trek Captains Log into plex. Did you already try to get this added to TVDB? I did not find it when I was searching TVDB so I’m curious, did you try to get it added and fail? or did you simply not try to get it added yet?
@charlie_vo Nope, didn’t end up trying. Between Tom80H’s response about how well the folkes over there would take it, I decided not to even try that route. (I also want to say that I was able to dig up a policy over there that confirms what Tom80H said, but I can’t remember if that really happened or if it was just wishful thinking to have a definitive answer.)
I still have my rip sitting in my “process this" queue ‘cause I haven’t convinced myself to split it all up like Tom80H suggested, even though I fully acknowledge that there’s a very high probability that it’s what I end up eventually doing. If you come up with another idea, pleass share it here.
