Multipart film with multipart subtitles (srt)

I’m looking for some advice on how to do this properly (I think I know), and how to make Plex work properly with it.
I have “Das Boot”, which is stored as 3 files, so I have “Films/Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981)” as the directory structure, and within that the files:

Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd1.avi
Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd2.avi
Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd3.avi

This works well, Plex “understands” and presents it as one film.

I also have the matching subtitles:
Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd1.en.srt
Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd2.en.srt
Das Boot The Uncut Edition (1981) - cd3.en.srt

This doesn’t work quite as well, the subtitles only play for the first part :frowning:

I’ve checked the subtitles files and I notice that in each file the index & timestamp starts back at zero (i.e. relative to THAT cd) - should I alter the srt files so that the indexes are consecutive across the files, and the timestamps are relative to the film as a whole?

At the moment my workaround has been to rename both the video files & the subtitles to be like “Das Boot The Uncut Edition Part 1 (1981).ext”, which the causes Plex to see the 3 parts as separate films each with their own subtitles, and this works, but is obvious less than ideal.

Anyone come across this sorry of issue before and can advise the correct way to fix it?

Thanks!

Use MKVtoolnix to combine each part and it’s accompanying subtitle into a MKV file.
Once you have 3 MKV files with embedded subtitles, use this method to concatenate all 3 into one file: [HowTo]: joining multi-part movies files with MKVtoolnix GUI
