Hi,
this may help somebody to enter multi-part movies into the library on Windows server.
The method described in Plex help adding -part1 and -part2 to the movie file name did not work.
After some experimenting this worked for me -
file - Cleopatra part 1 - I named Cleopatra (1963).mkv
file - Cleopatra part 2 - I named Cleopatra 2 (1963).mkv
the two files are not in a separate folder - they are in the main folder.
This will create two entries in the library which look identical and both are named just Cleopatra.
To find out which is part 1 and part 2 you have to look at the movie length. Once you know that, you edit the title accordingly.
cheers
I think there is just some confusion about what you are trying to do. but looks like everyone has what they want.
There are two different scenarios. There are two part movies that it is desired to have them both as separate movie listings. There are others where you only want one listing and the two files to play back to back.
The multi file movie article linked and what is what @CWallace is doing, is for when you have two separate files which it is desired for them to played back to back as if they were one file. he does not have to finish the one then go select the other file in his library. This is not very common any more with new movies but in the days when a long movie came on Two DVDs ( instead of a single bluray) or in the days of VCDs they were very common.
To make files do that you add the pt1, pt2 part 1, part 2 to the END of the file names like in the example of @CWallace
Today there are movies like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 which are two separate movies but if names the files like that with the part 2 at the end plex will combine them. To have them not combined one could add the year instead of the part 2 at the end like you have done or could use roman numerals Part II to avoid it
You explain it well. It should be explained like that in the Plex support articles.
When I first tried the described method I expected some sort of indication that the movie is made of two parts. There wasn’t any, so I assumed that the second part wasn’t there. There are posts on the forum where people say it does not work.
So I experimented and found the way to show the movie as two separate movies.
I have now done a second try, and I see that the displayed length of the movie is the total of two parts. When I play it, the second part comes on cleanly and by itself. Good.
