Hey all,
I’ve been patiently waiting for what I assumed to be temporary bugs, but it just annoyed the hell out of me.
I have a 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro with a 5TB HDD connected via USB. GB Ethernet connected via cable, nothing else. Both Plex and the Shield (8.2.1) are running the latest versions.
Here are the bugs I’ve noticed:
- Video play state is not stored consistently in the player, leading to inconsistencies in the UI:
- TV Shows > Pick Series > Pick Season > Pick an episode that hasn’t finished playing > Play. Finish viewing the show, go back to the season listing - episode still marked as [some percentage] played.
- Same as above, but go to the home screen. The episode still appears in “Play Next” and sometimes, after a few seconds, will correctly update. Sometimes not.
- requires a file that is slow to access, large, strange encoding and/or mkv not mp4:
- case A
- click on the item from the “Play Next” list, playback is initialized but not yet started
- quickly hit the back button
- navigate, episode is playing in the background
- case B
- play an episode
- wait for the loading spinner to show
- notice the background is colored to match the item banner
- go back
- select another episode from another series, which is fast to load
- the description and wallpaper of that episode will actually be from the still “loading” episode above.
- Settings > Plex Media Server -> always labelled as “stopped”, though working
- UX: Please add a clear marking which item is selected / focused, the scaling is not sufficient. In some cases, you have additional options once an item is focused:
- Go to a TV Show season, the last unplayed episode is automatically selected and focus is on the play button. But you don’t know which episode it is, because there is no marking on the thumbnail. Equally, browsing through episodes, going down to the Play button, you never know which episode you are in, unless you remember your scrolling. God forbid you step away for 2 seconds to grab some snacks. Plex used to have a gold outline around selected thumbnails / episodes, now there’s only scaling when you are focused on the episode.
- UX:
- delete a movie, series, season or episode
- after confirming you are taken back to the item detail screen and shown an error “The selected item is no longer available” - you think?! Is this just to confirm the deletion was successful?!
- UX:
- go to TV Shows > Library > Series
- hit “back”
- Library screen is shown, but the “recommended” Tab is underlined (ie. marked as selected)
None of these seem like edge cases to me, they are however highly frustrating. I assume the player and server on the Nvidia Shield are 2 totally separate codebases and the player needs to sync with the server through polling, not through push.
If it’s possible to replace the player with the web player, that would be awesome, I’m tired of this one, it’s so inconsistent.
