Any updates on this? This is super annoying. I made this Plex server to watch my media when away from home and I can’t watch any of my specials. When I’m at home I have to locate the file and use VLC to play it. Can’t do that when I’m not home. Pretty unacceptable.
May I please see some examples (actual ls -la directory listings) showing
- How the files are grouped (the top of the series directory)
- The contents of both the Specials/Season 00 directory
- The contents of Season 1

Apparently a fix for this issue will be in Server software release 1.23.2.xxx
I have installed the beta PlexMediaServer-1.23.2.4600, but this issue still remains on my Specials for The Office (US). When I select a special episode, it default plays S1E1. Here is my Specials directory:

Still have this issue. Looked like this was fixed in the newest release notes:
Updated to Plex Media Server 1.23.2.4625 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and the issue persists after update and machine reboot. My directory structure is the same as above. I retested the same episode /media/plex_storage/ripped_media/TV Shows/The Office (US)/Specials/The Office (US) - s00e314 - Season 3 Ben Franklin Deleted Scenes.mp4. Season 1, Episode 1 played instead. Here is my XML data again (in case it changed) for this episode, as well as newly export PMS logs just following the test:

New piece of info: I have this error playing from a web browser (tested Chrome and Edge). But playing from the Android client app worked correctly.
Just installed the Plex desktop app for Windows 64 bit, and special episodes do not play correctly here either.
It think it would be a server issue not a player one. Looks like there is a third scenario causing the issue for you. thanks for your logs. I did see some SQL errors in it but not sure if cause yet.
This issue has been marked fixed in several releases now but still appears to be broken. Is there any idea what’s going on, what’s causing this problem?
There is another attempt at a fix in the next beta. To be clear, each release note mentioning a fix has fixed something. We keep finding scenarios that were not considered so that’s why there are multiple fixes.
Will any further diagnostic information be valuable to these efforts?
We have another fix coming out soon. Please wait to see fi that helps. If not, we’ll need new logs and the XML for the special episode that isn’t playing correctly.
This issue is now resolved for me after updating to the recent PMS Version 1.23.4.4712 running on my Ubuntu 18.04 server.

Verified that on PMS Version 1.23.4.4712 issue is resolved.
FYI: In some cases you may need to start playing from beginning under the following condition:
- The special Plex reverted to was 60 minutes in duration
- The special Plex reverted to watched at a time exceeding the special length (e.g. 15m 1 second)
- The special you were attempting to play is 15 minutes in duration
In my case the file could not be played. Cancelling off the notification and selecting play from beginning fixed the issue.
