Music Artist with no album groupings results in an error - regression with 4.121.1

This bug has been introduced with version 4.121.1. Does not happen with embedded web version Version 4.116.1 or the previous plex.tv version.

Server Version → 1.32.8.7639

Steps to reproduce:
Access a music artist which has no album release types groupings. For example, for me John Williams has album; compilation and album; soundtrack release types but NO album release types. When I access his artist profile page I see this…

Have confirmed :

  1. this happens for other artists and not just John Williams who have no album release type
  2. does not happen with artists who have album release types
  3. also happens with plex for linux 1.84.1 which just got pushed out.
  4. optimize db did not help
  5. artist loads without problems on plexamp

Yep, I’m seeing the same behaviour. Didn’t check the release types at first, but looks like you’re right regarding the album groupings.

I’m having the exact same problem. Just added a new artist with one compilation album, and I get the same error on the plex.tv version, but not on the embedded version, which works fine.

Look what I found … Thanks Guys.

I’m experiencing the same issue on my Asustor NAS. Thought I was going nuts, Added two new albums with new artists. Never even dawned on me that the albums were a compilation and a soundtrack.

My Samsung tablet Plex app and Plexamp are fine.

My Roku Ultra Plex app has no issues.

My Windows laptop the web client futzed in both Firefox and Chrome but Plexamp is fine.

Geez Louise…

Thank you @anon5074910 for reporting and linking other similar threads here. This is a Web 4.121.1 and Desktop 1.84.1 only issue. As you mentioned in another thread you can work around this by using older versions of these apps.

The Desktop app installs usually have up to the last 3 versions in the local app data locations.

Windows - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\cache\updates
MacOS - ~/Library/Caches/Plex/updates

For Web, you would need to use the bundled Web app on your PMS. http://localhost:32400/webor http://IP-ADDRESS:PORT/web depending on where you PMS is located.

The issue’s root cause has been found and fixed. The fix is already in the release pipeline. I’m not sure when this fix will go out. With this being the holidays, I’m very uncertain when this will get out. Keep an eye out for any activity in the Announcements area for Web and Desktop.

I’m having this problem. But I’m not sure how to confirm the same root issue. How do I check what is the release type or grouping? It’s happening to me with an artist who has just one live album in my library. The original files that make up the artist have a metatag “RELEASETYPE” and the value reads “album; live”. But that doesn’t sound exactly like the above description.

Yes, its the same problem. If an artist ONLY has secondary type releases, like album; compilation, album; remix or album; live then their artist page will give this error.

They only display correctly if the artist has at least one album with a releasetype of just album.

As a workaround for now just use the embedded web client with your plex server as mentioned above.

Having the same issue here…across Windows 10 and Linux native clients, as well as the Plex.tv web client in multiple browsers (tried purging all browser cache/data too).

I don’t understand what “album groupings” means, but its affecting I would say “most of” my library which is almost entirely CD albums ripped to MP3 files. Problem-artists from Android I can pick the artist and see the albums, then pick an album and it plays fine, only affects all PC clients as far as I can tell.

Same.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Thanks for this. To clear up any confusion, if you open the artist in Plexamp and there is no Album, only Soundtracks, Compilations etc, you’ll see this error when opening this artist in the affected Plex app.

This is a pretty bad issue to have been sitting open for so long…100% failure rate on doing something pretty basic is a bad look.

Same issue here, it’s been a month and counting…

Going through a re-tagging all my tracks to include RELEASETYPE tags is too much work for me, as is reverting to an old version of the web player.

I’ve found disabling “Group by album type” fixes this problem also, at least on my Win10 PMS server

  • Go into PMS Settings
  • Click “Library” under the Settings section
  • Click “Show Advanced” on the right side of the screen
  • Scroll down to “Group albums by type” and select “disabled”
  • Click “Save Changes”
  • Go back to an artist you were seeing the error on - No error!

I love that this is even a problem with the Tidal integration. So even if you pay over 10 bucks a month extra, via Plex, you have inaccessible artists on Tidal because of this.

The fact that such an obvious bug slipped into the public web hosted version so easily, yet it takes over a month to apply the fix for it is incredibly unprofessional.

@solstyce9
:tada: Legend! This solved it for me too. Wish I found this setting a month ago.
Thanks mate
