Plex has always seemed like music was a second cousin but the recent changes on Android seem to have made plex pretty much unusable with music. For instance:-
As soon as you have a queue and you wish to find further music it searches everywhere for anything you look for and having found it in your library, your friends, some streaming service you have to pay for, and the neighbors dustbin, it then wont let you add it to the queue as you only get to choose the location, NOT that you wish to add it to the current queue.
Why is it that when I am in MUSIC, and I wish to find MUSIC does it have to search every connected library, and any other random data feed that plex wishes to push, and find so much unrelated or unwanted noise?
I’m sure google would have more chance of finding music on my library than I do at the moment!
I get that plex want to push their commercial agenda and open the world up to services they might be able to cash in on but as a lifetime pass owner I should surely expect some focus on my ability to use to the software for what it was originally conceived from…a personal library of content.
Can we please have the ability to limit the searches to a) our own library, and b) a particular content type.
That way I might have a slim chance of finding some music before all my party guests give up and go home.
I’d like to sit here and blow smoke up peoples arses in the hope of getting a favorable response but to be honest its 2 hours into the new year and my key focus for the new year has been to log on here and moan. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Why would I vote for a feature titled “Music experience is ruined”?
What app is this happening on? Because I just went to my music tab on iOS, searched on Paul and the first set of results were grouped by artists, the second by album name, then by track. And for each of those, results from my local server were listed first. So while not completely filtered, they were at least sorted in a reasonable way.
I think the title is quite accurate, nobody said the title has to describe the feature…it just has to draw you in
The “feature request” would be to make search scope configurable so you could turn off searching friends libraries and other bolt-ons like news, podcasts, etc.
To explain the issue in more detail. This was using plex android (tablet and phone) to connect to a roku player and play music during a party. A typical situation where you get people asking for tracks to be added to a play queue.
To demonstrate:
Queue some music tracks
Search for a track you know is in only your library
tap the 3 dot menu on the found track and you have the option to add to queue/play next etc
Now Search for a track you know is in yours and another persons library that you have access to.
In amongst the search results you get a result found in multiple locations
there is NO 3 dot menu and if you tap the track you get a choice of location followed by a warning saying that it will cancel the queue and play that track. this is not what I want to do I want to add it to the queue
I am sure we could debate if this is a bug, but from my point of view I want it to be simpler.
I don’t want to be searching the whole of my own library when I am in music looking for music and I certainly don’t want to be searching everyone elses library, news, podcasts and other such crap wasting cpu, network bandwidth and time.
I’m sure others might feel differently but I don’t really care for it
I don’t expect to get enough votes, hence the frustrated rant in the first post rather than sucking up for votes. I just needed to vent.
Its Plex Android 7.9 which was connected to a roku plex player.
My fear is this is paving the way for all the rest of the clients to follow the same awful path
For me, the music experience isn’t what is should be. I also wish there were an option to search for content that was only within my servers, and an option to add any of those search results to the currently playing play list (“add to now playing”).
Oddly, my old Zune and Windows Media Center PC had that option. Surely, the wizards of PLEX could make it happen.
It is a source of frustration for sure. I don’t mind the idea of a global search but that should not be the default. With thousands of tracks in my music library a search is a must and if I am lucky enough to be the only server with the content I can even use the triple dot menu to add to a play queue but most of the time I’m not the only server with the track so I’m screwed.
I also find the search seems to miss things. Quite often I’ll search for something I know is on my server and it wont list it on mine, just someone elses. Theres no logic to it either as other times it will find it!
