Mine was working fine for months. When I initially set it up I found a syntax error in the folder I was supposed to point to. After this most recent Plex update, it now does NOT work and just shows “There was a problem importing”. That’s such an informative error. Plex version 4.34.3 running on the most recent update of Windows 10.
The Plex community is huge. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a better setup allowing paid Plex Pass subscribers direct access to help from Plex employees, considering how much time and effort goes into features.
I’ll troubleshoot this for weeks. I don’t want to dig through logs and figure out why something stopped working. I pay for this and I just want it to work. I’ve not made any setting changes. It will just randomly start working again. The only thing to do now is decide how long I can live without a broken feature until is randomly starts working.
+1 - we used to have access to ask a ninja forum but that’s been gone for a couple years.
I am bummed about the playlist feature. The music is such a good feature but the lack of iTunes import playlist is a huge bummer. I hope the fix it.
I would like a “share playlist across Home Users” feature. This would be huge for managing my smaller children’s music accounts instead of logging in as them to build it multiple times
Sounds like this isn’t an issue on my end. That’s an answer
Go to settings.
In the MANAGE section click Libraries.
Click Music.
Click PLAYLISTS on the top status bar.
On the side column on the left, click on the 3 dots next to Playlists.
Choose “Import from iTunes…”
Check “Overwrite existing playlists.”
Click IMPORT.
I did this just now and its the same error. Plex reports “There was an error importing” and thats it. Nothing else happens. Last time I had this issue, I had to put my iTunes folder link in quotes in the Plugins page of Plex, but not it appears even that doesnt help.
I am using PLEX Web on a Mac and tried to follow your instructions. I can go to settings, I can click manage libraries but there is no way to click Music and no way to click playlists. These items (buttons) do not exist. Pretty frustrating experience with Plex. I use it with WD My Cloud Home (Plex support with built in Plex media server) and for test reasons with a Plex media server on my Mac. I use it because My Cloud Home does not play h.265 encoded videos. Plex does. So far, so good. Google Play Music is dead. You Tube Music plays Music videos (I hate this). I hoped to import my playlists into PLEX. Spend hours to find a way. Soundiz connects to the Plex Server for 3 seconds and cancels the connection right after - does not work. Musconv “successfully transfers” Playlists but they don’t show up. Tried the Web-Tools (Plugin for Plex) with Port 33400. Does not work either (firewall of my Mac off). WD My Cloud Home does not allow access from third party programs such as Soundiz. Other ways are so complicated that I don’t even understand the instructions (manually write playlists with “Postman”, for instance). Which version of Plex are you using? In my version I just cannot click the buttons you suggest because they don’t exist. Screenshot possible?
I am able to get iTunes (now Apple Music) Library.xml imported by scanning library files first, then importing. I think the issue is that the plex needs to be able to access files AND know about them. If it doesn’t “know” about a file referenced in the playlist then the whole import seems to choke, even though the file is perfectly accessible. This is a bug Plex, please fix. At least add the scan as a pre-step for the importer
The workaround for now:
From the plex UI, goto “Music” (or whatever media type you are importing)
Select the 3 dots next to “Music” at the top-left of the screen
"Click “Scan Library Files” and wait for it to complete
Try to import your playlists
This is in addition to other posts stating the import will fail if it cannot find files due to incorrect paths in the Library.xml file, spaces in paths without proper quotes (or “%20” replacements), permissions, etc.
