Music Naming Convention Changed

It seems that the naming convention for music files has changed recently. The last time I updated my library, the following was recommended from the Plex Support section…

Music/ArtistName/ArtistName - AlbumName/TrackNumber - TrackName.ext

Now it is simply…

Music/ArtistName/AlbumName/TrackNumber - TrackName.ext

Is it necessary for me to update my filenames again or is the old method still valid?

The naming convention has not changed. It is still recommended as per this document:

In the lower part of the document it is mentioned that the simpler form (which you cited as second above) is tolerated by Plex if the embedded metadata of your files are complete and in order.

That is the article I was referencing. Has it never changed? I’m almost positive that when I checked it last (months ago) that the first format was listed, and now it is the second format I listed.

I have embedded metadata for all files, so I suppose changing it isn’t necessary.

If you follow the link, you’ll see that actually both are listed, but the first one is still the recommendation.

So, I thought I’d add my question on the back of this. I am starting to add all my CD to plex, mostly classical and I am running into a problem that I haven’t figured out. I see the conventions posted above but what I have is “Artists & Composers” so if I have a Mozart CD with various contributor to the cd I do /music/mozart/ 01 symphony #1 - Solti, 02 symphony #2 - Previn, etc? But what if i want to highlight the conductor like/ music/Andre Previn - Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra/Carnavel des Animaux/01 music #1, 02 music, etc? Will the right album cover show up for either. Will the music in both instances show up for album and artist?

I am using

and I am not having problems right now. Is it that bad of an idea?

This should be no problem as long as the internal metadata of your files are in order.

If you add further music, I’d recommend to use a similar structure like the other media types in Plex
Music/AlbumArtist/AlbumTitle (AlbumYear)/TrackNumber. TrackArtist - TrackTitle.ext
