In the preview build just released, I’m getting crashes sometimes during music playback. Playback of a track in the queue will end, and instead of playing the next track, Plex will exit to the Xbox One dashboard. This also sometimes happens when I try to skip to the next track. I’ve encountered this while playing albums as well as playlists and with different music files.
Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 5.1.3
Me too.
Thanks for logging this. Thought it was just me.
No Plex Pass here, otherwise same setup and same symptom when in preview build and playing music (mp3s and FLACs): sometimes it plays a couple of tracks, occasionally even three or four, but usually it plays one track and then crashes to dashboard.
Happens regardless of whether I’m ‘pushing’ from Plex on PC to Plex on XBox (ie, connected to client on XBox and controlling music from PC) or ‘pulling’ from Plex on XBox.
Not had it happen when watching videos, so seems to be a music thing.
I’ve backed out of the preview and everything music-related is working fine again now.
Maybe entirely unrelated, but I see Plex have been working with Microsoft to try to eliminate buffering issues, so I’ll mention it just in case it helps devs to troubleshoot: for years (since Windows 10, I think) casting music from PC (Cast to Device) to XBox (Groove music) hasn’t worked properly, with symptoms similar to what’s happening now in Plex preview build on XBox: one or two tracks will play, and then Groove crashes (not to XBox dashboard but to Groove’s main screen) and Cast To Device on the PC freezes for a minute or so. The issue has been logged numerous time but Microsoft have never fixed it, probably because it affects such a low number of users. Hopefully Plex devs don’t take the same stance. Unless it’s fixed, Plex for XBox will be useless to those of us who use it as a music player.
It’s happening to me as well on my Xbox One X. the app updated the other night and watching TV works as it should but music is broken
PMS version: 1.20.1.3252
Xbox One app: 5.1.3
Thanks for the reports, we’re looking into it. It might help us if there were some consistent pattern as to when you see this error. Does it occur for particular files? Does doing certain actions make it more likely?
I think I’ve tried to play a music every way imaginable. Going to the Artist and starting a song. Going to an Album and starting a song. Shuffling all music. Each time I manually change the track, the app crashes completely and sends me back to the XB1 dashboard.
In my case, the error seems to happen whenever the next track in the queue is an MP3 file, whether the track comes up on its own or whether you manually skip to it.
For example, if I have a playlist with several AAC files folowed by an MP3 file, the AAC files in the playlist will play just fine, but as soon as the MP3 file comes up in the playlist, a “Buffering” message appears briefly and then the app exits to the dashboard.
Likewise, if a playlist has one MP3 file followed by several AAC files, the MP3 will play fine and Plex will proceed to play the AAC files in the queue with no error.
I’ve tested this with several different MP3 files and gotten the same results.
I think I see a pattern with variable bit rate MP3s (tried a couple VBR and 192KB encoded albums). Seems like I can play other albums without problems, but Plex on Xbox One insta-crashes after playing a VBR encoded MP3.
@rrusson That’s interesting. I just tested this myself to see if the results were different when playing VBR vs. CBR encoded MP3s, but I still got crashes with both.
Thanks for the info, we’re still looking at this.
Thanks for looking into it. I’m seeing the same behavior. Crashes when tracking forward or back and upon finishing a song it crashes to dashboard as well.
Sorry, after several more tests (original n=10) I can’t seem to find any pattern. Now that I’ve tried MP3s that are large/small files, high/low bit rate, VBR, short/long song length and the crashes seem random. Sometimes I can play a whole album, but more often Plex crashes after one song.
Same issue here but I’d neglected to update the server to v1.20.1.3252 from v1.19.x.xxxx (I didn’t catch the whole version number before it updated.) until after the crashing started so it’s likely app (v5.1.3.1) related. None of my other apps have issues (iPad, PC, etc).
Strangely, it had been working just fine until this afternoon. I use Plex as a music player nearly every day and we had the preview mode on for possibly a week?
I can’t play media in a playlist or directly from albums, etc either unless I fall back out of the preview. Sometimes it will play a song, sometimes 2 or the last try I hit play and it crashed out of Plex before playing anything. The attempt that crashed after one song as I was typing this was an album (not a playlist), no shuffle and VBR mp3s all encoded at the same time - so no changing the codec used to play the media.
I will do more looking to see what sort of encoding methods / files types were used on the media if needed.
I agree, it appears to be random. I hope you guys are able to get this fixed…I’ve been using the web app on my PC to stream music to my sound bar. Would be great to be able to use the Xbox app again.
Hello, I’m having this issue as well. It occurs when skipping tracks (seemingly without fail, or close to it), and often when simply moving automatically to the next track.
The files I’ve been listening to are all FLAC.
Please fix this ASAP. I rely on this app for music while I’m working from home, and it’s now essentially unusable.
I thought I’d add that in my setup the Plex Server is installed on a Ubuntu Linux machine - in case that matters, with regards to something like a codec or whatever not playing nicely.
So, server: v1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9 amd
Server OS: Ubuntu LTS 18.04
xbox one app: v5.1.3.1
Just to let you know, we have identified the issue and a fix will be included in the next update.
@Moussa looking forward to it. any idea of an ETA?
Here’s some logging after Plex played one track then crashed before the next, if that’s helpful.
