Apple TV app exits after random period playing music (shuffle)

For several years we have routinely left music playing (shuffle of our entire library) on the Plex app on our Apple TV, sometimes running all day long.

A few weeks ago, we noticed that after some random period of time, the Apple TV Plex app exits back to the Apple home screen and stops playing music. It may be after 3 minutes, 20 minutes or over an hour. If we pick the Plex app again, it opens in home screen, but Now Playing as it normally would of we stopped the music ourselves. The Apple TV screensaver starts after 2 minutes so it starting isn’t directly causing the app to stop.

There had been no change to the configuration when this started (unless it was an auto-correct to the Apple TV app). However, I have done several PMS version updates since it started and none have fixed the problem. I have uninstalled the Apple TV app and reinstalled with no benefit. I have turned off DLNS in PMS with no benefit.

The PMS is running on our Synology DS216Play. The Apple TV is 4K model. Both are connected via Ethernet rather than wireslessly. The NAS is connected to office router that is wired in main router in living room. The Apple TV is connected directly to main router.

Logs from PMS and Apple TV app attached.

Mine does the same in shuffle at start of new track it produces a strange noise then crashes

Thanks, had not noticed that but will listen for it.

Hopefully, an answer to what’s going on is in the logs I uploaded.

Any suggestions?

What does it take to get Plex staff looking into a problem like this?

Still nothing, huh? Problem persists, makes Plex useless for music.

I have cancelled my Plex pass. Will consider renewing if this is every fixed.

Uploading new logs, this time with verbose mode on.

Count me fed up. I’m outta here. Sick of Plex issues, not just the music stopping playing as I reported here but other issues with playback of shows on my tablet.

I’ve cancelled my Plex pass and have uninstalled Plex on my Synology NAS and all my devices.

For anyone reading this, strongly suggest you check out Emby. I have had ZERO issues with it since cutting over to it from Plex.

Ex-Plex,
Nate

I’m also having this issue. When playing any music, after a handful of tracks the app will crash back to home screen. Seems to be the same when playing an album or shuffling a playlist. The app crashes after a seemingly random number of tracks - sometimes after only two or three, sometimes after eight to ten.

Server version: 1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d
Apple TV app version: 2.8 (13363)

To track this down you’ll need to post the PMS and Apple TV logs right after the app crashes:

PMS logs: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/
Apple TV logs: https://support.plex.tv/articles/212639598-apple-tv-logs/

Server log attached: Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-19_17-55-01.zip (4.3 MB)

I’m having trouble posting my Apple TV log - I get this error each time I try the Apple TV’s IP on port 32500:
HTTP Error 504: Error accessing Plex Media Server
[NSURLErrorDomain] Could not connect to the server. (-1004)
This is with the “enable log download” setting turned on. Is there any way aorund this / any other way to get hold of my log?

I gave up on Plex and switched to Emby. Love it! Way better in so many ways!

@darcilicious can you suggest anything re. getting Apple TV logs?

I’ll try to find some time to work on this tonight. But it may be tomorrow before I get back to you…

Thanks, appreciated.

I could not replicate this issue on two different ATVs (one non-4K, one 4k) after hours of playback.

So, I need you to replicate again, repost the PMS logs shortly after the error and then (also after the error) on the ATV, restart Plex, and try to pull the log from the ATV via the web again.

I am also having this problem. I will try to replicate again and grab the logs to get them posted in case this will help.

Thanks for those logs! We also found the crash report associated to them. At first look, no idea what could happen. We’ll investigate

I would like to add my voice to this problem.

Plex on Apple TV, playing music – stopping unexpectedly.

The last few months Plex has been of no use to me – whenever I want to listen to music, it almost never finishes an album. Plex quits unexpectedly or freezes up in the middle of a song – most often during the transition from one song to another. For information, I never play in mixed mode – always one album at a time, each song in sequence.

I have been waiting patiently for a fix to be released. This is not the first time Plex breaks a media experience that used to work. I do not often complain. I have never gotten any help from these forums. This is a last sigh from a tired supporter.

I have bought two lifetime subscriptions, hoping that Plex would serve me and my grandchild my content for years to come.

I am feeling that my patient is running out with Plex.

I am using AppleTV, 4th generation (model A1625, tvOS 13.3).
