Hi,
I’m having a PLEX Music Server that stores my music. I have my Music (10.000 tracks) sorted in folders (each folder = one playlist). If I add my music to PLEX Library, PLEX thinks that each folder is an album. It does not take my original metadata, but replaces it with the metadata of the first track in the folder. That’s how many songs from different artists get the same icon and metadata. I have tried using the Local Media Assets (Albums) agent and using the “prefer local metadata” option. But it just doesn’t read it and replaces it with what it thinks it is. (the metadata of the first song since it thinks my folder is an album and the artist is the same.
This is totally incompatible with how Plex handles music. It won’t work.

And why would you “cement” this playlist that way, anyway? Where is the variety?
Plex can build variable playlists (or “Radios”) for you, fully automatically.
But in order to do that, it has to identify your music, so it can go out and download a lot of metadata, which is not tagged in your files.
To identify your music, it needs a folder organization that always follows
Music > Artist > Album > Songs
All tracks in a folder are treated as an album, as you have found.
That way I’d have to reorganise all my 10 000 Tracks. Is there really no other way?
I just don’t want to have THIS structure.
I would have to extract all files into one folder on my PC, then sort by artist, create one folder per artist and then sort in the music. After that I would have to go to Spotify (where I had my music before, sorted by Genres in Playlists) and then create all those playlists in PLEX…
and each time I create a playlist in Spotify, and buy the titles as files afterwards, I would have to sort them into the artist folders and create the playlist.
Now that you know my problem, ist there any other way to, at least, handle that A BIT better??
I do really like PLEX. I am familiar with Ampache, but I hate it, and I already have my movies database in PLEX…
You can try this:
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums
Move the line ‘Local Media Assets’ to the very top position.
Then create a new library in Plex, of the type “Music” but, before finishing, go to the tab ‘Advanced’ and set
Scanner = ‘Plex Music Scanner’
Agent = last.fm
Then point it to the folder with your music, on the ‘Add Folders’ tab.
This may or may not work.
Because by doing so, you are switching to the old Plex music program code, you won’t also be able to use all the newer improvements, like Radios, album recensions etc.
An other method would be to use software to move your files into subfolders, based on the metadata.
If all your files already have the artist and the album title ‘tagged’ in them, you could employ e.g. mp3tag to do the moving for you.
Thank you for your answer.
Is it also possible to sort the titles Music > Artist > Songs
?
That would be much easier for me to handle.
No, definitely not.
