Music Tracks out of order

I have all track mp3 file names as they should be, 01 - track through 17 - track. All ID3 meta tags have the same track numbers as the file names. Plex sees the track numbers when it creates the list of tracks for the album, the font color shows this.

Plex shows this album as track 11 first, then tracks 1-10 and 12-17. What can I do?

Also, if I show XML, the element <Track, the attribute index=“11” as it should.

I can think of a couple of possibilities. One is that, even though you have the ID3 tags set, Plex may not be completely configured to prefer them. Follow this guide to make sure.

The second is that there may be an error in your tagging that you haven’t noticed. For one, do the single-digit track numbers have leading zeroes?

Can you post a screenshot of your tag editor showing the filename, track number tag, and Title tag? Here’s a shot from one of mine:

The file names are all exactly as you show. Track number has a leading zero where appropriate, space dash space and track name. All sort correctly by name in the file system. Plex sees 11 as a track number in the library, the font is a different color as with all other tracks. 1-10 and 12-17 are sorted correctly, 11 is not. It does have Track Number, Artist, Album, Track title, ArtistAlbum tags all filled in as do all other tracks. I use Swinsian on the Mac or iTunes to edit tags. Track number is a numeric field in those, it doesn’t have a leading zero. I don’t care if Plex uses tags, that was a last resort after it wouldn’t sort by filename correctly. One difference I noticed is that the XML for track 11 doesn’t have a parentIndex attribute while other tracks do (I may have that name incorrect but it’s close) . I don’t know what to do to get Plex to work but I’m tired of being a beta tester. Thanks for your help.

One last item. This library does not have an Advanced choice under Edit Library. Other libraries do, this does not. The choice appears to be there but is grayed out/disabled. The library is a music library separate from the generic Music library.

The reason I suggested making sure Plex is using the embedded tags is because it’s possible that the problem is in the tags Plex gets from Last.FM. Your embedded tags could be perfect, but if Plex isn’t configured to prioritize them, they aren’t doing you any good.

Believe me, I understand your frustration. Several years ago, I was so frustrated by all the errors in the tags that came from Last.FM (and Gracenote, in Premium libraries) that I spent months going through my music files making sure the embedded tags were correct, then configured Plex to prefer the embedded tags. 99% of my frustrations went away.

What’s the album this is happening in? Is it just one album, or the whole library?

That’s interesting. I have no clue why that would be. What are the version numbers for the Plex Server and Plex Web app?

These MP3 files are for a course I’m taking over a couple of months. Every few days a new track is released. I created a Library to keep these tracks separate from regular music tracks. The Library is a music library type even though the tracks are spoken word. I do not have an Advanced selection on the Edit Library for this particular library so I can’t choose the Use Tags like in your linked post.

Also, Plex interprets the dash between track number and title as the first character in the title. So every track in the library has number in the left column, dash as the first character in the middle column.

Yeah, that lack of the Advanced section has me stumped. Hopefully a Ninja can jump in and offer something more. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
